I don't see Nix when I head out for my morning run, which isn't all that unusual, so I don't think much of it. When I come back a little while later, showered and shaved and ready for coffee, he's still not around and I start to wonder. All through my cup of coffee I wonder, running through the scenarios in my mind and really not liking some of them.

Coffee done, I go and knock on his door, as if I haven't already checked there more than once. There's still no answer, and I go inside only to find the room still empty. This time I force myself to look around, really see the room the way I've been refusing to do the last couple times I checked in here. There's none of the usual clutter that can be seen, evidence of Nix living there, and I know what the logical conclusion is.

He's gone.

But I can't just accept that, I won't accept that, not without making absolutely sure. I know people have disappeared and shown up elsewhere on the island. So I stride through the door that connects our rooms, determination edging out any pain or grief that's been trying to work its way in. I pull on the trousers of my uniform, a t-shirt and my jump boots, strap on my trench knife and my pistol, and set out.

Many hours later, the last of the sun's rays are fading from the horizon and I'm sitting in Harry's dell, my back against a tree. I'm filthy and I don't give a damn. I've looked everywhere, both on this island and the other one, and I can't avoid the fact any longer - my best friend is gone. I almost lost him once on a dirt road outside of Neunen, and now I have lost him, to the unpredictable ways of this island.

I lean my head back against the trees and close my eyes. This time, there's no imminent combat to distract me from dwelling on this loss.

[Feel free to find him before he sets out, after he comes back, or sometime during his search. The dell is right by Currahee, just a little to the north. His eyes are closed, but it's highly unlikely someone could approach without him noticing. Open to new tags through Wednesday.]
