Although Elizabeth had been thinking of it since encountering Sonya and her acquaintance sparring. She not have found time to spar with anyone yet - part of her had held back on doing so given how long it had been since she'd crossed swords with anyone even in practice. There was no shame in losing to someone more skilled when it was mere practice ( Read more... )

It was much cooler to ride out in the jungle than the beach, with its shade and helping Penny become used to people. Without a sidesaddle (not that that's ever stopped her before), Felicity has taken to wearing jeans while riding, noting that they're eaiser to clean then wearing stockings.

She was riding along the boardwalk when she saw someone with a sword, and she was surprised when she nudged Penny a little closer to see it was a woman. Felicity could see that she had some skill, but with little experience in even watching swordplay, she wasn't sure if she could judge...

Especially when said sword was turned toward her.

"Beg your pardon." She quickly apologized, falling into her 'old' way of speaking from surprise. "Twas only watching." Penny snickered a bit and she pulled on the reins to keep her from running.

It was not anyone familiar but Elizabeth hardly meant to go around threatening children. She wasn't threatening anyone - merely making sure she would be able to if needed. And she appeared to have startled the horse as well. "That's alright," she said. "I was only practising. I didn't mean to startle your horse."

She may've not intended to threaten anyone, but Felicity would've certainly considered holding a sword out to be a little threatening.

"It's alright, Penny just startles easily." She leaned forward and stroked her horse's neck. "Tis why I take her out through the jungle, so she may get used to be around people-and it's not so hot among the trees." She admitted.

Elizabeth sheathed the sword putting off practice now she had company and glanced over at Weatherby who was still quite content batting the plastic toys about. She nodded - it was certainly more pleasant amongst the shade provided by the trees. "Well as long as she's used to you," Elizabeth said. "I suppose that's the important thing." Elizabeth had had a pony when she was little and lived in England but when they arrived in Port Royal and it was still uncivilised, riding had been curtailed by her father who had worried - not entirely unreasonably - that Elizabeth would stray outside the grounds of government house and get herself in some mischief.

Felicity nodded, her voice serious. "It is important, otherwise she wouldn't even let me near her let alone let you ride her. Heaven forbid you try to do so without atleast letting her sniff you ut, she'll kick you to the ground before you could slip the bridle on her."

She told people that she had 'tamed' Penny, but really Felicity believed that her horse only let her near her because she didn't beat or starve her.

Felicity slid off of the blanket she used as a saddle. "Felicity Merriman, and this is Penny," she patted the horse's neck. "Are you a swordswoman?" She didn't see the point in hiding the amazement in her voice.

This raised an eyebrow from Elizabeth, who to be honest approved of such spirit whether in animals or people and despite the fact that it made the horse skittish. "At least she's safe from horse thieves," she remarked. "Though there is little crime on the island anyway." And what there was seemed to be death and mayhem not petty crime. She stepped forward and held an arm out for the horse to sniff - while glancing over her shoulder at Weatherby. Elizabeth would not chance the horse reacting badly while near the baby if she could help it.

"I'm Elizabeth Norrington, and that's my son Weatherby." Weatherby had rolled over on his stomach and was peering up at the horse rather interestedly. Felicity's tone brought back sharp memories of thinking that world was entirely dull and unfair for everyone of the fairer sex. "Yes," she said. "Of a sort anyway - before I came here I was a pirate."

Penny nudged at Elizabeth's hand, sniffing her. She smelled unfamiliar but her human was calm around her, so she must be saft: she let her pet her.

"I don't see how a horse thief could get away with such a crime." She sounded relieved. "Tis not like one could very easily hide a horse for long here."

She looked at her a moment. "Oh, you're Mr. Norrington's wife then? I met him when I first arrived here in November and he told me a lot about you."

Elizabeth petted the horses nose, it was oddly familiar for all she'd had nothing to do with horses for years. And it was strange to hear James called Mr. Norrington without some sort of military rank but it had been true enough for their entire time on the island. And that time in Tortuga that never got a mention.

"I am," she said. Part of her wondered just what James had said about her in November when Weatherby had been small and she had been barely speaking to him. He certainly hadn't mentioned meeting anyone new - not that she would have listened if he had. "He's off sailing today, he crews the Dawn Treader for those that wish to travel to the second island." Elizabeth liked sailing but knew for certain that she would easily get bored of going back and forth like that.

"I've seen a ship on the beach, with a dragon's head. Is that the Dawn Trader?" Felicity had little experience with ships, but it looked like a fine one, definitely exotic.

"Have you ever been to the second island?" It seemed like it would be interesting to explore, but she didn't want to go into strange territory like that. Maybe she could ask Jack to come with her.

"That's it," Elizabeth said. "With the purple sails." Elizabeth was biased and preferred her own Empress despite it's strange modern design but the Dawn Treader was the only ship of size. No doubt if such was needed it would be the power in the waters around the island.

"I have," she said. "I went when it was first discovered - some time ago now and I've crewed on the Dawn Treader myself before Weatherby was born." It had been interesting - at first but after time the novelty had worn off - there was naught impressive about the smaller isle. "Are you wanting to see it?" she asked.

"Perhaps.." She said innocently enough. No doubt she wouldn't be allowed to, because of her age. "I may ask Jack O'Neil if he would let me go."

She let Penny go, knowing that she would either stay in the shade, or go back to either of the stables (she'd been to both long enough to know the smell). Penny went over to the shade and sat down in the shade of the hut, resting on her legs.

"Do you suppose you could teach me how to sword fight?" There were times when she couldn't get the thought of Trisha in the clinic bed out of her head, and she thought that if she could fight, she could help her-or help herself.

"You do have to take an adult," Elizabeth admitted, she knew that much and supposed it was a sensible enough rule. Though she had sometime before she had to worry about that sort of thing - she did at least see things from a more parental point of view. When she tried ( ... )

She thought a moment, before giving a tried and true reason.

"Why not? I've seen ladies as scientists, teachers and explorers, and learning how to use a sword looks much more interesting than learning about different stitches."

She didn't say that one of the reasons she wanted to learn was because of what happened to Trisha. Felicity knew that even Jack wouldn't allow her to go after someone who could do that much damage to a child, but she would rather know something to defend herself then nothing at all.
