Life on the island certain was never without its complications. They were different complications from the worlds they'd all come from, of course. Here the IRS was not going to make an unexpected visit, you weren't going to get pulled over for going ten over the limit and you didn't have to worry about racing to the bank before it closed. But there were plenty of other things to make up for it.

Chief among those things, Dale thought, other than medical concerns that surprisingly seldom seemed to be an issue, was the complication of arrivals. The mere arrival of a new person on the island was often enough to throw entire lives off-kilter, for better or for worse, and it was something they had no control over whatsoever. Dale was a person who long ago had come to accept that there were many things in the world that he had no control over. But that didn't mean he had to like it. And in fact, said lack of control in certain areas often led to excessive control in other areas.

This was probably why he could be found, on this particular day, on his hands and knees in the open Council office, reorganizing and realphabetizin all of their records. Every single one of them.

It was a tedious job, but someone had to-- well, no, no one really needed to do it. But nonetheless, he did.
