Somehow, Xander had made himself a life on the island. Between Spike, his friends, the building crew, the club and classes, he barely ever had any down time and he actually liked it more then he thought he would at home. But even though classes were out for the moment, Xander didn't really find himself any more time to relax due to Spike's growing ( Read more... )

Seeing a fluffy bunny hop towards me, and hearing someone shout for its return, made me do the only natural thing: crouch down and put out my hands to catch the thing. It didn't go as well as I'd hoped. The bunny leapt. I ducked back, and felt something land. I sat up, then stood up carefully, with the bunny balanced on my head.

"This yours?" I asked Xander.

Considering Jesse was the size of a house cat, he was flopping over on to her shoulders too. Xander scrambled to his feet and relieved Polly of the large rabbit on her head. "Oh geez Polly, I'm sorry. He usually doesn't do stuff like that, he's too lazy."

Jesse just wiggled his nose in Xander's arms, looking around curiously.

"Sometimes they put on bursts of speed," I said, grinning. "All animals do. Often precisely when you have the front door open." I reached out gently and let the rabbit sniff my fingers. "So cute!" I looked up at Xander. "You don't often see people taking their rabbits for a walk, though."

"I wouldn't say speed had anything to do with. I think he was more wondering what the butterfly would taste like. He tends to think with his stomach." Unable to help himself, Xander smiled at the compliment to Jesse. "Because I don't think they do. Jesse was supposed to be modeling for me so I could carve a toy for Vala's son. He had other ideas apparently."

"That sounds like a challenge," I said, genuinely impressed. "You don't generally hear of animals being good artist models. Especially not with all the distractions of the outdoors."

"Well, he usually is content to just sit and eat! I didn't think distractions would be a problem!" Xander exclaimed as he looked down at the now calm bunny who was perfectly content hanging from his owner's arms. Then he shook his head. "I'm sticking to pictures for my models from now on."

"I'm told that pictures can only show so much," I said. I smiled at him. "But at least you've got somebody who can stand guard."

Xander snorted and looked down at Jesse's blank expression. "Oh yeah, real fearsome this one." He held him out, holding the rabbit's paws and trying to make him look ferocious. "Grrr argh! Doing anything for ya?"

I smiled. "You should spend time in the children's office. I suspect you'd be good with kids." I meant it as a compliment.

"Oh well...I don't know about that." Xander said with a small chuckle. William was one thing sure but other kids? Xander had had a hard enough time wrangling a few on Halloween.
