Sam had spent the morning working. It had been a good, fairly productive morning, and she thought that she might actually be getting somewhere instead of the futile banging her head against a wall that she'd been doing for some time now. It felt good to be working with numbers and equations and theories after a year of forced absence from anything ( Read more... )

Jack had managed to coax the bookshelf into a cheesy romance novel called Talk Nerdy to Me and while he would have preferred the heroine not be a model and an engineering genius, he figured it wouldn't be too bad. Besides, Carter could have been a model. She did have the legs for it.

But at the sound of his beloved engineer expressing her frustration at the bookshelf, he looked up.

"You know, some of us are trying to see if mild-mannered Charlie can seduce fashion model slash engineer Eva. Just saying."

Sam gave him a look that was equal parts sigh and oh good grief. "I can't believe you're reading that," she said, as if she'd never read anything in that genre before. "The characters are complete stereotypes that promote unrealistic expectations of women in general and their relationships in particular."

"I'll have you know that Eva is both a fashion model and an accomplished engineer with a knack for alien technology," Jack said firmly. "Since I can't have less than clothed time with my own engineer with a knack for taking apart alien doodads, I'm improvising."

Still, he put his book down and looked at her.

"Want me to try?"

"Ha, no, that's okay," Sam said, shaking her head. She wasn't sure how the bookshelf operated, but she had a feeling if she let Jack within ten feet of it after that little comment it would go from offering up self-help and relationship books to giving up the swimsuit issues of Sports Illustrated.

"Don't trust me to entertain you?" Jack asked, smirk pulling at his lips. "We can go weave baskets and learn knot-tying later."

"So you're a camp counselor now?" She gave the bookshelf a glare and leaned against it, looking at Jack. "Just how attached are you to reading that book right now?" It was a little strange to see Jack reading anything with multiple pages, much less a romance novel.

"Mmm, well, depends. Do you have something better to do in mind?"

Jack smirked a little. "It's not like we can go park at Lover's Lane and neck, you know."

That would normally have gotten a very pointed sir in response from her, but they weren't on the sir-and-Carter level anymore. Where exactly they were, she didn't know, but she did know where they weren't.

So instead she just sighed. "I didn't have anything in particular in mind, no."

"Did you want to read with me?" Jack asked, tone a little less over-the-top than before. "I can see if the bookshelf will give me something less...salacious."

Why yes, Jack did pay attention when Daniel used big words. He just didn't always use them correctly.

Sam shrugged, a little amused that Jack was using words like salacious. "Go for it," she said. "It can't give you anything worse than what it's giving me."

Jack nodded, slipping an arm around her waist while he looked. He spied a beat up paperback on one shelf and plucked it off.

Crosswords.

"See? Crosswords? We can do them together. That'd waste some time, wouldn't it?"

She'd dared Jack to do a crossword once, and had expressly forbidden Daniel to help him knowing the first thing Jack would do would be to try to pry answers out of him. The memory of some of his more inventive answers made her smile. "You want to do a crossword puzzle." It was partly a question and partly an expression of amusement.

"I want to do a crossword with you," Jack corrected. "There's a subtle difference there."

"Semantics," she teased, but she looked around for a pencil (found one in a pencil cup on a table, along with two dead pens) and settled on the couch. There were easy ones in the front, getting more difficult closer to the end. "Easy or hard?"

"Medium?" Jack suggested. "Don't want you having to do all the work."

"Okay." Sam was still amused by the fact that they were sitting down to do a crossword puzzle together. It was kind of domestic, although she had a feeling that Jack was just doing it to a) humor her and b) have an excuse to sit next to her, neither of which she minded.

"First clue: a five letter word for the vertical face of a stair." Well, that was easy, and she neatly printed RISER in the blocks.
