Chinese New Year might have been River's favorite holiday. It might have been that it was one all full of symbolism, from the decorations to the food, but she thought maybe it was that it required reference to ancient Earth that was lunar cycles just to figure out the exact day it took place every year.
This year she was more into it than usual, because it was baby Zoe's first big holiday party. Veronica had helped a lot, and they had everything they needed set up around Serenity: tables full of lucky food and lanterns and lots of little red envelopes with symbolic money, since the island didn't have any, to give to people along with wishes for a happy and prosperous year to come.
There had been some concern with the date falling on Valentine's Day this year, that the island would have some kind of disruptive trickery, but here it was midafternoon and nothing had happened other than the appearance of a booth outside the compound, with messengers offering to deliver notes. River and Pam had taken great advantage of this offer, mostly on behalf of Samantha and Zoe, who of course could not write for themselves yet. They hadn't realized the consequence of this, now that the notes were being delivered right in the middle of the party.
Pretty much everyone who had been invited the party had been sent a Valentine, and the delivery people (surly men with wings and arrows) were being very insistent about the recipients taking delivery of their messages. It was kind of disruptive, but it did make the party interesting.
