Solitudes

Things never seemed to come one at a time.

Crazed madman killing people. Naturally that couldn't be the end. That couldn't be the price of Sam. No. It had to take away one of the few pople who'd actually built a life on the island. It had to take one of the only people left that he cared about.

The island did not remind Morrigan of her Wilds. Nonetheless, wandering the jungle was something that came naturally to her, moreso than lingering nearer the strange grey building and other signs of civilization. Nonetheless, sometimes she wandered close, and this time her steps had taken her to this waterfall. She was grateful for the opportunity to bathe, which she did quickly and efficiently, secreting herself behind a large rock to dress in the strange clothes she had obtained in the building.

When she stood to pin up her hair, she saw that she was not alone.

"And how long have you been there watching, hmm?" she asked of the man, frowning as she smoothed the fabric covering her torso. It was a silky blouse, needless frippery, but better than a Chantry robe.

Honestly, Cam had only noticed she was there when she stood. He'd been too focused on blocking out his thoughts (and maybe he should have asked Morgan about meditation) to notice anything else.

He blinked at the woman's question, and turned his attenion from the water. "...What?" Another blink, a moment later. "Vala?"

Morrigan's frowned deepened, if that were even possible. Again, the name of the woman who looked like her.

Well, why not use it to her advantage this time? With the Devon creature she had not known, but now she did, and perhaps some usefulness would come of this likeness. Or, at the very least, some amusement.

"...Yes," she said slowly. "Why? Who did you think I was?"

Well, she looked like Vala, across the waterfall, but she was acting strangely. Maybe it was just him. He'd yet to meet a clone who didn't fiercely defend their individuality.

"...No one. What're you doing out here?" He'd never figured Vala for a waterfall person.

"Is there a reason I should not be?" Morrigan inquired. She sauntered out from around the rock, leaving her staff and things behind it. She doubted this Vala carried a staff; it would be a dead giveaway that she was not...well...she.

She kept her distance, though, not moving any closer. She did not know just how alike she was to the woman this man knew. Too close and any subtle difference might alert him.

Well the sauntering helped the resemblance, but not so much the formal speech or the keeping her distance. He frowned over at her a moment, before standing. "Is there something wrong, Vala?" The only answer her distance could mean was something had upset her.

"No more than usual," Morrigan said, and that much was truthful. She brushed damp strands of hair away from her eyes and sighed.

"What of you, then? You seemed to be deep in thought, just now." That much Morrigan could tell, even without actually knowing the man.

'No more than usual' generally meant there was something especially wrong. And naturally something would be wrong with Vala. On top of all of it.

He bit his lip, and shook his head. "Nah. Just...listenin' to the waterfall. You sure everything's alright?"

His concern was annoying. Morrigan wondered if Vala, too, found it so.

"Yes, I am sure," she said, keeping her patience remarkably well, considering the circumstances. "Why do you poke at me so? What inner workings of Val- of mine could I possibly reveal?"

Poke? None of this was matching up to Vala. Not the clothes, not he stance, and definitely not the way she was talking. She could have been playing at something, but after two years on the island, thee were too many other possibilities to jump to that one.

"We could start with the one where you tell me who you really are, and why you're pretending to be Vala?"

Morrigan sighed, rolled her eyes and shrugged, almost all in the same oddly graceful movement.

"Perceptive all of a sudden, aren't we?" she sneered. "It took you long enough. You must not know this Vala well to have mistaken me for her. A man I met mere days ago realized I was not she straight away. I," she announced, reaching behind the rock to pick up her staff and pack and leaning on the former, "am Morrigan."

It was a bit odd, but only moreso because she looked so similar to Vala.

He wasn't in any particular mood to be generous, so he wouldn't waste his time pointing out that he knew Vala quite well, and the island was very good at confusing bodies. The name, though, did give him pause.

Seriously? Morrigan?

Okay, so maybe he'd give her a little. "This place is good at doing strange things to familiar faces. I try not to rule anything out." He pointed at the woman, frowning. "You're the one who pretended to be Vala, when I gave you the chance to identify yourself."

"I was hoping to gain someone information on the woman." And her child. Morrigan scowled at him. "But you proved yourself hopelessly unhelpful in that regard."

"My apologies for failing to offer up satisfactory information about a dear friend to a stranger who happened to be posing as her." If she wanted to be snippy at him, he had a whole Winter full of bad attitude to toss back at her. "You could try asking, instead."

"I doubt you would tell me what I want to know," Morrigan said, turning up her chin. "I would not, were I you."
