The wind lifts her hair, fair and golden and floating like Ophelia's in the water, blows so hard that Cassie could swear it lifts her, too.

She's really done it this time. The pills sit heavy like a fist in her stomach, but she's so light, she can't be arsed to care. She grabs her napsack and she runs, finds a park bench on a hill, plants her feet, raises up and closes her eyes.

There was another bench, on another hill, in another country.  "It was another time," Cassie whispers, letting the wind take her words, too.   She presses her fingertips against the breeze, cooling the memory of someone else's blood, hot and sticky where it fell against her hands.

"Oh," she exhales, drooping eyes suddenly open again as she pitches forward, arms turning pinwheels to catch herself.  Her toes curl inside her pale blue slippers to find the bench, but when she looks down, it isn't there. The edge of a bright, hard concrete roof shines up where only wooden slats should be, and when Cassie tips back her head, the sky is bright and blue.

"Oh wow."

Cassie stands, staring into the endless sky, and she thinks, if she stays long enough, the lightness spreading through out her body will bear her up, and she'll swim into that big empty blue above. It would be better, she thinks, for her and for everyone, and she could do it.

Heels on solid ground and toes hanging over into nothing, Cassie raises her arms. She could.
