Baby's 1st Birthday
Kate suspects that Sam doesn't really know what's going on. He seems to understand things like no and Geoffrey and Duck and outside, but other than that she draws a bit of a blank. It would help if he would just say a word but everyone insists that he's totally normal and that she and Jack just need to be patient. Who knows, maybe today will be the day. She cannot believe it's been a year already and as much as their good luck makes her anxious, she tries to push that aside and focus on Sam, staring up at all of his smiling guests. Much to Jack's amusement and possible worry she had insisted on making the cake for the guests and Sam's own tiny cake herself. Which had turned out completely edible, thank you very much due to Anne Shirley's guidance. Strawberry with white icing. Totally edible.
She's dragged a bunch of chairs around the largest table in the kitchen and plops Sam down into his highchair as she forces everyone to join in a round singing Happy Birthday to a very dubious looking baby and his tiny cake. After the singing stops, everyone waits in anticipation as Sam does exactly nothing. He stares at the cake and then back up at his parents, then back down to the cake again.
"That's yours," Kate says, poking lightly at the icing and quickly swiping it across Sam's tongue. "See, it's good."
God, how embarrassing, even her baby knows she shouldn't bake. "Maybe we should do presents," Jack suggests as Sam continues to look at them all like they were nuts. Kate shrugs at their guests and points to the larger cake. "Go ahead, with that one. I swear to God it's edible." It's at that exact moment that movement catches her eye and she turns just in time to see Sam raise his chubby little fists and swiftly and deliberately smash them with all his might into his cake, looking for all the world like he's gearing himself up for another go at it.
"Right then, okay, cake time."
