Sam itchedHe'd been on the island for two weeks now, and every time the worst of it was over, he turned out wrong. He chewed on his lip and the inside of his cheeks until they bled. He bit his nails, and then his cuticles. He tapped his foot when sitting, and he never stood still long. The hut was okay, for what it was, and Sam had slept in ( Read more... )

"I'm sorry," Karen said, walking in, "but boar meat really does make up ninety percent of our meals."

Half the night of the Halloween party was kinda hazy for Karen, but forgetting Sam, big as he was, probably didn't happen often. Not that it explained why he was going around slamming fridge doors, but the guy had a brother who happily led a zombie dance party. She could cut him some slack.

"Yeah, well, it's disgusting in there," Sam snapped irritably. He'd seen worse, way worse, but right now nothing turned his stomach more, or got him hungrier, than the thought of blood.

"Oh, I get that," Karen said, grabbing a cup out of a cupboard. "I mean all that food, the pies, the pastries...totally gross."

Teasing someone who looked as irritated as Sam probably wasn't a great idea, but it was practically Karen's default setting.

She was being purposely obtuse, and while it might have been endearing a week ago at a party, it wasn't now. "The bloody boar parts," he finished, rolling his eyes. "No, you're right, totally appetizing. What am I thinking?"

"Okay, point," Karen conceded as she opened the fridge herself to grab a jug of juice. The meat wasn't anything new to someone who'd been around a while, but even then, it didn't look like anything more than what you normally find at the supermarket, or something. "You don't like the sight of blood, or something?"

"Yeah, something," he confirmed half-heartedly, angling away when she opened the fridge. His stomach still hadn't settled and he felt like he might lose it any second. "That really so weird? There aren't any vegetarians on this island or something?"

"Nope, not weird," she replied, looking over her shoulder at Sam. Up and over, rather. Karen knew a lot of tall guys, sure, but Sam kinda seemed to put them all to shame. "Just...unexpected. They can make vegetarian meals, if you ask the kitchen to."

"Just don't like the bloody meat," Sam grumbled in response, but now that he had the thought in his head, he felt like he couldn't get it out. Moving a little stiffly, he folded himself into a chair, elbows on the table in front of him and head cradled in his hands. He was like a fucking addict, he thought. Shaky and sick without a hit. Jesus, what was wrong with him?

Karen watched Sam for a few long moments, about as concerned as she could be for having known him only about a week.

"You want some water or something?" she asked, which was all she could come up with without seeming intrusive, when her real question was what the hell happened that a little bloody meat made him look like that.

"Nah, I'm just..." Trailing off, Sam shook his head. Winchesters didn't ask for help, didn't let other people in. Besides, even if he wanted to, how could he explain that he wanted the warm taste of iron in his mouth. "I'll be fine."
