"What the hell are you doing to the furniture, Scotty?" asks Jim, leaning his ass back against the pool table and folding his arms across his chest. "I mean, seriously. You going to take the place down around our ears? It's been what? A month? You cannot seriously be this bored already."

He smirks.
At least Scotty's keeping busy.

Scotty laid down his hammer and grinned up at the Captain. He'd been so absorbed in trying to take apart the damn thing he'd not heard him come in.

"Oh, it's no' boredom, sir, it's research. I'm trying to take it apart to see how it works," he explained. He reached to the floor behind him, and held up a crowbar. "Any chance ye could lend a hand? This thing's a lot more solidly put together than I'd anticipated."

"I'm pretty sure you're going to piss the natives off if you start ripping up the soft furnishings, Scotty. Even if it is for research."

Instinctively, Kirk's liked Montgomery Scott since the first moment he met him, and now he's crew, so it's very different.

"What are you trying to work out, anyway?"

"I'll put it back together when I'm done," Scotty said, with just the slightest hint of a pout. He wouldn't like to be thought of as destructive; everything he took to bits, blew up or vaporised, he did to for a purpose.

He moved round and tried with all his strength to prise a shelf from the backing with the crowbar, but it was impossible to get any purchase.

"I'm trying - without much luck so far - to find out what makes it do what it does," he said, wiping his brow on his sleeve. "It changes the books depending on who's looking at it, but I can't see where it stores them, or where its power supply is. It's not at the same level as the rest of the island's machinery, that's for sure."

"Better not take it apart at all, man," says Kirk, arms still folded across his chest. He arches an eyebrow.

"We're stranded on a magic island and you're worried about why things do the things they do to fuck with us?"

"There's no such thing as magic, Captain," Scotty said, casually passing the crowbar from hand to hand, pondering a different strategy. "Only things we don't understand yet." He grinned up at Kirk, the same smile he always reserved for those poor unfortunate souls who didn't understand the joy of discovery. "Anyway, what else have I got to do round here asides from being bored and getting sunburned?"

"There are the chicks in bikinis," points out Kirk, grinning. "Uhura's got a bikini. You must have noticed."

"Aye, well..." Scotty squirmed a little, avoiding Kirk's cocky, leering gaze. "There's only so many hours in the day you can waste looking at girls." He looked back at Kirk. "And by 'you' I mean 'I', I can't speak for you, obviously."

It certainly hadn't escaped his notice that there were an awful lot of attractive and available women on the island, and that many of them didn't wear very much at all, but Scotty had never really been the most sexually driven of men. Not that he didn't look at them, and sometimes wonder, maybe entertain the odd fantasy while he worked, but really, he wouldn't know where to begin.

"What d'ye make of Uhura, then?" he said, his voice taking on a mischievous tone. If he knew the Captain, a small thing like her being a little older and from a different timeline wouldn't change his views on the poor lass at all, but it was worth asking.

Kirk can quite happily spend all the hours in the day looking at girls, and he wouldn't call it a waste of time either. He's starting to worry quite seriously about Scotty.

"I think she's still Uhura, which is...pretty weird. And I think she's even more beautiful now. Which is...you know. Also pretty weird."

Scotty laughed. "Captain, name one thing on this island which isn't pretty weird."

He dropped the crowbar and picked up a blowtorch, turning it over in his hand with a thoughtful expression. Maybe not; not without a fire extinguisher to hand, anyway.

"You've got a point, though. She's a fine lass, is Uhura. Whatever her current bikini status."
