Gilead Homeplot

Oct 27, 2009 02:12

Dated August 7th, 2009:
Waking up in a medieval whorehouse may seem like an inauspicious way for an adventure to begin, but given that our dubious heroes are Randall Flagg and Lloyd Henreid, no one should be surprised.

When Flagg and Lloyd awaken not in their beds on the island of Tabula Rasa but in a shanty cathouse nestled in the crooked back alleys of Gilead's Lower Town, both are equally dismayed to find that they've somehow managed to world-hop together. Flagg, at least, is at home, known in Gilead under the name of Marten Broadcloak. He assumes the role and, much to Lloyd's bewilderment, drags his former flunky along for the ride.

Meanwhile, in another part of town, Cuthbert Allgood and Alain Johns also awaken to find themselves back in their beloved homeland with a handful of unanswered questions. They're surprised to find that the city is plastered with missing person posters-- with their own names and fottergrafs. Trying to cope with the unusual situation of having arrived somewhere between Cuthbert's future and Alain's long past, the boys manage to make their way to the castle and are met with disbelief and delight at their return from traveling between worlds.

Not far away, Alianne of Pirate's Swoop and Sandor Clegane awake bright and early in a cornfield. After considerable confusion, they sort out their situation as strangers in a very strange land and decide to make for the white city on the hill-- but on the way, they're accosted by a pack of highwaymen who immediately regret their choice of quarry.

Dated August 8th, 2009:
The following evening, Flagg makes Lloyd a proposal: if he is willing to help Flagg lay hands on the most powerful magical artifact on this side of Mid-World, Flagg will use its powers to return Lloyd to the island. There's only one catch-- Lloyd will have to thieve the glass himself out from under the nose of Roland Deschain. Having been burned by Flagg rather epically in the recent past, Lloyd's reluctant to agree... but before he can protest, he finds himself embroiled in a ridiculously over-the-top barfight and, once again, in Flagg's debt.

Having gained entry to the castle by absconding with a pair of guard uniforms, Aly and Sandor are then separated amid the mad crowd making preparations for the ball to be held in honor of the gunslingers' return. Alianne is caught and subdued by the formidable ladyservant Magda, who insists upon shaping her captive into a proper lady in time for the party.

Despite the fact that they are the evening's guests of honor, Alain and Bert can't help but feel out of place under the unusual circumstances of their return. When they run into Sandor and Aly unexpectedly, it begins to feel a little more like a party. But Roland's increasingly strange behavior distracts the gunslingers, and when Roland mysteriously leaves the party, Cuthbert and Alain decide to trail him. Not to be left behind, Sandor and Aly also follow, determined to get to the bottom of whatever is going on behind the scenes.

After catching up, Cuthbert and Alain discover that Roland was also seeking out the wizard's glass, but found Cort instead, who was returning to the ball after tossing the thief in prison. But the plot thickens when Cort explains to the gunslingers exactly who that thief is.

Lloyd isn't quite sure what to expect when he sets out to pilfer a pink palantir, but it sure as hell isn't Bert's fatass drill sargeant buddy guarding the joint. Cort's never liked him much, and catching Lloyd red-handed doesn't do much to improve his opinion. Flagg shows up in time to intercept the glass, but disappears before the guards can arrive... or Lloyd can escape.

Once again abandoned by Flagg, Lloyd gets tossed in the clink and informed by Cort that he can expect to hang at sunrise. While he attempts to cope with this news, he's befriended by a kindly guard named Ham who assures him that the gunslingers will set all to rights.

Not long after, Cort leads the confused Roland, Alain, Cuthbert and Sandor to the prison, where, to their complete consternation, Lloyd is being held as a thief and a traitor to the Affiliation. Unaware of Lloyd's ties to Flagg and, therefore, the sinister wizard the gunslingers call Marten Broadcloak, Cuthbert swears to Lloyd that it must be a mistake, and the party leaves quickly to sort out the matter with the Council.

Flagg doesn't believe in underestimating the value of a dramatic entrance, and so he shows up in the nick of time to free Lloyd before the gunslingers can return. What he doesn't realize is that he's being followed by Aly, who senses something rotten in the state of Denmark and chooses to spy on the wizard in lieu of following her friends. It's a decision that pays off, as she witnesses some of Flagg's dastardly spellwork and catches the pair skipping town with the wizard's glass. You can take the girl away from the trickster, but you can't take the trickster away from the girl, and sure enough, she's hot on their trail before even the gunslingers and Sandor can discover the jailbreak and give chase.

The wizard's glass, however, has a mind of its own, and won't be caught quite as easily as Flagg and Lloyd. Just as the conflict comes to a head, a brilliant pink-violet explosion returns the islanders to the safety of their own beds.
