Psych? As in “Gotcha”?

If you build it, they will come.Shawn had to wonder: if you got others to do a majority of the building for you, would 'they' still come? It didn't really matter either way - he obviously didn't need to rely on solving cases to keep food on the table and a roof over his head anymore - but knowing that didn't make him any less curious ( Read more... )

Well, wasn't that something. Someone had set up a private detective's office, and it wasn't him or his daughter.

Private psychic detective, he amended. Even Vinnie Van Lowe hadn't stooped to that. Often.

"Psych?" he said, out loud. "That what you say when you hand them the bill?"

"No..." Shawn replied, squinting his eyes against the sun as he looked up from his digging. "I said 'thanks, remember us the next time there's a robbery, missing person, and-or murder and the police are standing around scratching their heads." Or something along those lines, at least.

"Unless the chief of police was the one handing over the check..."

"Don't expect any checks," said Keith, chief of police, with consummate dryness. "Does this count as your letter of resignation?"

Where did he get the window? The IPD didn't even have a window.

"...does anyone around here expect any checks?" And were they getting them? Did he have to write a strongly worded letter to someone? Because he would... totally get Gus to do that for him. "If I was going to resign, I would have done it when I started working at The Catscratch. This place isn't exactly a crime mecca, and you don't have to be psychic to know that's not going to change anytime soon."

"Most private investigators aren't exactly about the crimes," Keith said, still inspecting the window. "Not the legal kind, anyway. I always got more cheating spouses and background checks than diamond heists."

Then again, with the island population drawn from where it so often was, might not be true for everyone. Lucky bastards.

"Well where's the fun in that?" Peace of mind for the party doing the hiring, sure, but talk about lame. "I worked directly with the police department on most of my cases, so more dead bodies than deadbeats. Sadly, only the one diamond heist."

And it had only been the one ring. Did that even count as a heist?
