Max Carrigan has never been what you would call athletic. There was a prevailing attitude at his high school that if you wanted to attract girls, sports were an easy way to do it, but Max had always found it easier to simply be himself, and to better result than any of those sad fuckers on the football team. He stayed active enough, though, all ( Read more... )

"Wow, man," Nate remarked from his spot by the door. He was dressed and ready to go for a little time on the court himself, and he'd kind of hoped for a pick-up game. But he hadn't expected Max. "That was almost impressive," he said, trying to keep a straight face but failing. Sarcasm wasn't Nate's strong suit.

"Hey-" Max counters, pointing across the court at Nate. "Basketball may not be my forte, but if you need someone to be a lazy fucker, there is no one better qualified. Just you remember that."

"Right, next time I'm in need of a lump on the couch, I'll know who to call." He half-jogged over to the ball with loose, easy strides and scooped it up. "Seriously though, man, can you make a shot or were you just fucking around?"

"I'm really that good," Max confesses, his smile lopsided as he lopes over to Nate. "The talent just oozes out of me, I'm sure you can feel it. You can touch me if you like," he adds, holding a skinny arm out.

"Yeah, no thanks," he said, dribbling the ball as he playfully shied away from Max's arm like it might bite him. "You keep your talent and I'll keep mine. Might be dangerous to intermingle."

"Yeah, well," Max concedes with a knowing cant of his head and a shrug. "You're probably right about that. Did you play back home, or are you just good at every sport ever invented?" Nate looked like someone who could easily be the latter.

"I didn't play on the team, but I could find a pick-up game easy enough. You know, New York." He shrugged and didn't argue with the
'good at every sport' line. Nate wasn't that multi-talented, but he had enough raw ability that he got along well enough. Especially when most of the games he played were with family, and that was just about winning however you can, not skill.

"I was on the lacrosse team. I was busy enough."

"So the second option," Max supplies with a chuckle, perfectly happy to hang back and watch as Nate dribbles the ball away. "I don't even know how the hell lacrosse is played, to give you an idea of how sports-deficient I am."

"Yeah, a lot of people don't," he said, not so much to reassure Max as take whatever wind Nate had in his sails out of them. It wasn't like he was getting a scholarship on his abilities or anything. "It's your inability to play basketball that I'm really worried about."

"Hey now, I can play!" Max protests, holding both palms up defensively. "Just... not well," he adds with a chuckle. "I can't be blamed for it, I had too many chicks to pick up and too many joints to smoke to worry about shit like that in high school."

"Man, I did the same thing and I still had time!" Nate argued with a laugh. "'Course I probably had it easier with only one girlfriend and the money for good shit. At first, anyway."

"I had money for good shit," Max argues, but then smirks with a dismissive wave of one hand. "And too many girlfriends. I was getting enough of a workout, don't you worry about that. I just wasn't playing basketball. I don't think lacrosse was even a fucking option, but that's okay, because I wouldn't have played that, either."
