On the whole, he's feeling much better, even if the chickenpox did live a perfect scar between his eyebrows and he's pretty sure he's never going to be able to have honey on toast again. Or oatmeal. Just thinking about it gives him the shudders. Even so, he can still feel that he's been kind of unwell, and, if he's out in the sun too long he can feel his head go a bit spinny, so, today, he's mostly tooling around in the compound, enjoying the air-conditioning and trying to stay out of everybody's way.
Particularly Edmund's.
With his sneakers kicked off, enjoying cool concrete under his bare feet, Charlie's bouncing on his heels and studying the bookshelf, looking for a movie. It's October, so he wouldn't mind something scary or something, something with zombies and a lot of blood, something like that, but what he ends up with instead is Western Summit High's GREATEST AFTER SCHOOL FIGHTS. They sold so many of them, it sort of makes sense that one of them would turn up here. There's even a picture of him on the cover, getting his ass kicked.
It must be nostalgia that makes him put it on.
There's no other possible reason.
He gets through a lot of people he doesn't really know (plus Kip, poor Kip, and if he ever sees Murphy again they're definitely having a conversation about shoving people into lockers) and then he gets to himself, his first day at Western Summit, and he remembers, he'd been on such a high because he'd just auditioned for the play and Susan had really liked it, and then there'd been Murphy and it really had been his face making that noise.
I hear you've been getting into scrapes with the other boys.
It really was the best euphemism for getting your ass kicked that Charlie had ever heard.
He watches himself getting his ass kicked projected on the wall.
