Seeing the baby a week before had really made things real for Ellie. It was one thing to know she was there, but it was another to have a picture. At the very least, she was put at ease seeing everything was progressing normally. That she was finally starting to feel better after what felt like a long time of always feeling sick helped along her ( Read more... )

Serena had a bundle of clothes under her arm as she walked into the basement, but she turned and headed right over to Ellie, smiling curiously. "What are those?" she asked. "Aside from the obvious." Laundry could wait a little bit. She could always make time for Ellie.

"Offensive baby wear, apparently," she said, actually letting out a laugh at that. It was crazy to think these things even existed. Dropping the clothes back into the box, she shook her head. "I think the box wants my baby to become foul mouthed out of the womb."

Serena laughed, brow furrowing sympathetically, and knelt down beside Ellie. "Oh, Lord," she murmured, laughing again as she reached for one to smooth out against her knee. "Oh, this is awful. Why would anyone even put that on their baby?"

"I'm hoping this is just an island thing," she said, sighing. "But you know, I'm sure there's plenty who would let their kid wear it. Mine will not be one of those children."

"The idea never even crossed my mind," Serena assured her cheerily. Biting her lip, she grinned, folding her legs and letting her clothes sit in her lap. "So have you guys picked her name yet?"

"We're starting to narrow down," she replied, brightening a little at the subject. "It's such a big responsibility, you know? I want her to like it when she's older."

Serena nodded. "Well, I've heard a lot of people name their babies a lot of really weird things," she said. "I mean, Peaches? Really? That's -- it's a fruit, not a name." She shook her head, then remembered her point. "But you, you and Devon, I know you'll pick something just right. She'll love it."

Serena laughed, rolling her eyes. Apple. That was about as bad as Tinsley. She liked Tinsley Mortimer, but the girl had gotten the short end of the stick names-wise, even for a socialite born and bred. "Yeah, probably," she agreed. "You can't do worse than the girls I knew, at least. I grew up with some pretty weird names."

"I knew a couple from high school. The joys of living in California, I guess," she said, shaking her head in amusement. She'd seen plenty in the hospital she worked, too. It was enough for her to make sure she never became that parent. "I've been getting tons of baby name books, lately, though, so at least this place is cooperating at least a little bit."

"So you'll have lots of ideas," Serena said, grinning. Pushing to her feet, she decided to try doing her laundry while she talked, just to be a little more productive for once. The keyword, of course, was try, given her talent for getting distracted. "At least you guys can bounce them off each other and make sure they don't sound too crazy or whatever."
