Some days, it's like Sirius can feel that other shoe waiting to drop. It's a tangible thing, an entity, hovering over his head like a rain cloud in a cartoon. Some days, he wants to take hold of it and pull it down just to get it over with ( Read more... )

For a second, Scotty hardly notices there's someone jumping from the waterfall. He just doesn't expect to see a jump in progress; the beginning of a jump maybe, or the end of one, but when he arrives at the waterfall, someone is in mid-air on his way down to the water below. The movement finally catches his eye, and he watches the very last moments of the plunge; it's then that the worry starts, a soft question that creeps to the forefront of his mind.

... is that person okay? He sets down the lunch he'd bundled up for himself and approaches the edge of the water, looking closely for signs of struggle or drowning or... blood, too surprised still to snap into any sort of action.

It's all a bit anticlimactic after he hits the water, nothing broken or bruised, and when Sirius surfaces again in a flurry of dark hair, he's calmer than he's any right to be, under the circumstances. He shakes his head like a dog, spraying water back into the pool around him, and doesn't notice that he's not alone until he pushes the weight of his hair from his face.

"Poised to make a daring rescue, then?" he asks, smirk instantly curving his mouth, stray bits of hair clinging to his cheeks.

Scotty hadn't had the chance to recognize the daring diver, but now that he knows who it is, he can feel the concerned look slip off his face to be replaced by a soft smirk of his own. He crosses his arms over his chest, giving him a mock-scolding look.

"Yeah, and you're lucky you're okay because I was never good at CPR. What were you doing, jumping from all the way up there?" Here his amusement slips away with genuine concern, and he gives Sirius a look that says he finds all this to be a touch insane.

"Flying," Sirius easily replies, as if that's self-evident. He's got no idea at all what CPR stands for, but it's far from the first time he's been confounded by Muggle terminology, and he doesn't ask.

He dips below the water, and when he surfaces again he's at the edge of the pool, hair slicked back from his upturned face as he smiles invitingly up at Scotty. "D'you swim?"

"Unless you have wings, an airplane, or a broom," he adds with a fond smile, "flying doesn't usually work. Sorry to break it to you." He makes an apologetic face that turns into a smile at Sirius's question. "Mmhm, but I try to limit my swimming to when I'm wearing a bathing suit." He gestures to his T-shirt and shorts and settles his hands on his hips. "I'm not really dressed for the occasion."

"I'm sorry," Sirius begins, leisurely bobbing in the water, smile anything but innocent, "Did I miss a memo about the tropical island dress code? It wasn't in my Welcome to Mystery Island fruit basket. Is it that people are shy in California? Or perhaps you're just so bloody sweet you're afraid you'll melt clean away," he adds with a smirk.

The last comment brings a shier smile to Scotty's face, and he ducks his head for a moment before he recovers. "You've clearly never been to California if you're asking if people are shy."

Beyond that, Sirius's challenge is having its desired effects because while Scotty had been trying to live life like a grown up before he was pulled here... never let it be said that he didn't know how to have fun when it counts. He glances around before he slips off his sandals and tugs his shirt over his head, leaving it and his shoes with his lunch. He makes his way into the water and over to Sirius, smiling at him.

"Could you do me the favor of making sure I don't start melting away?" he teases.

"And how might I do that?" Sirius asks as he moves to meet Scotty and leans in close, their bodies nearly touching. "Afraid I've only got experience in making people go all melty, not the other way round, but I'm a quick study. 'Course, I might just fancy you being a bit melty."

He notices how close Sirius is and he can only bring himself to care a little bit; instead he grins and tilts his head, his nose crinkling as he talks.

"Did anyone ever tell you that you're incredibly charming? Or is that just how British guys are born?"

"I've met enough British twats in my life to know that can't be true," Sirius replies with a knowing arch of his eyebrows. "Must be me," he adds, and then smirks. "Or you're just easily impressed. Not that I'm complaining, mind you."

"I am not easily impressed," he says firmly, putting on a face to show just how much he means it before it smooths out into something as flirty as a few moments ago.

"So I guess that means it's just you. I don't think I'm complaining either," he teases, wrinkling his nose.

"Well," Sirius begins, and chuckles low in his throat, "as long as we're on the same page." He doesn't hesitate or second-guess himself; tip-toed against the bottom of the pool, he reaches up to frame Scotty's face with one damp hand and presses a full kiss to that flirtatious mouth as if it's the most natural thing in the world to do. Clearly it was the only reasonable option, under the circumstances.

Scotty does, in fact, melt into it, his eyes sliding shut and his mind shoving aside thoughts of Kevin. He feels guilty, he does, but he doesn't bring up Kevin because, really, he doesn't know what this is or where this is going, and you don't bring up the ex right after the first kiss. Right now -- right now Sirius's lips feel good and Scotty's eyes sink shut as he returns it, reaching out to settle a hand on Sirius's waist.

He breaks it gently, smiling warmly, their noses brushing. "We're definitely on the same page."

Charming or not, Sirius is still a royal twat. There was a time when he was utterly unaware of that, and he isn't sure which is worse: Not knowing at all, or knowing and not doing anything about it. There is a dim part of him that wants to look Scotty square in the face and announce that he really ought to run in the other direction because he's terribly sweet and being seduced by a self-centered tosser. Unfortunately, Sirius' ego tends to drown out what his dick doesn't, so he's all secret smiles and easy demeanor instead. It's easy to do when he genuinely likes someone, easy to justify.

Maybe he feels bad about it, a bit, and maybe he'd thought of James at some point between coaxing Scotty out of his shirt and kissing him. Maybe both of those things are progress, or maybe they just make Sirius more of a wanker. Probably the latter.

"Now aren't you glad I convinced you to go swimming?" he asks with a self-satisfied smirk, and tugs Scotty closer by the waistband.

His guilt is still nagging at him, and he can't shake the feeling that maybe this isn't such a good idea. He knows he's letting himself be carried away, but a part of him wants that, wants the rush of letting loose and falling into someone's arms for a few moments. After the shock of arriving here, of suddenly finding himself alone and homeless despite having free food and free shelter and no real worries for his immediate needs... he's homeless in every other sense of the word. Everything he's come to love and call his own is gone, and the only good rush of newness he wants to feel is growing infatuation ( ... )

"Could have, but then you'd still have your shirt on," Sirius counters, thinking it a perfectly reasonable argument. "What is it with you and food, anyway?" he asks, and begins to kiss up the line of Scotty's jaw. "Sandwiches aren't very sexy," he adds in a murmur beside Scotty's ear. "Next time, you ought to make it whipped creme or honey or something horribly cliche like that."
