There had never been a shortage of magazines on the bookshelf when Serena checked it. Real books, even good ones, cropped up, too, but magazines had been plentiful from the start. It was kind of silly, she guessed, reading up on fashions she couldn't follow and people she hadn't seen in ages, but somehow all the spun fantasy of things like Vogue ( Read more... )

Peering over Serena's shoulder, Blair arched an eyebrow and frowned. Some things never did change and apparently bad girl Serena had hopped a plane for Europe and taken a body-shot tour of the continent.

Figures.

"Apparently you weren't. I hope you got your shots."

If there was anyone Serena was okay with showing these to, it was Blair, who was bound to find out eventually about anything which occurred in the known universe at some point or the other anyway.

"I really don't think I had medicine in mind," she said dryly. "Or my health."

"Well that's obvious."

One didn't have to be a rocket scientist to know that whatever had been going through Serena's mind none of the thoughts had been to use the alcohol as an astringent.

"Anyone interesting? Or is it just you making a scandal with every inch of you across the world in full color?"

"Carter," Serena murmured, shaking her head. "Just... Carter Baizen, again and again, which..." There was plenty she'd done in her life that involved Carter, but where this fit into all that, she didn't know. In any case, it looked like she and Dan really were solidly broken up, which, after their trip home, was a bit of a relief. "I don't know."

"Seriously?"

It hadn't been Blair's intention to sound like an extra from Grey's Anatomy or something as equally tragic. God, they should just knock a couple of braincells off her right then and there.

"I guess that puts the final silver nail in the Humphrey-van der Woodsen coffin."

Serena glanced over at Blair with a small, rueful smile. "Yeah," she said, "I guess it does. Which is -- I mean, it's a good thing. If he ever turns up here now, maybe I won't... have to explain to him a third time why I'm dating someone else." She was done with that part of her life, done with him, but it never got any easier to tell that to Dan.

Patting S on the arm in what she felt was a somewhat consoling manner, Blair sighed and nodded.

"Exactly. And then he's free to make all the bad, Brooklyn based decisions he wants. He can make his own granola and yoghurt if he wants."

"Blair," Serena said, a touch scolding. "Come on. They'd be waffles." It felt good to make a joke of it, just for a moment. She didn't love Dan anymore, but he'd meant a lot to her at one point. It was hard to forget that sometimes.

"I would not have guessed Carter would be next, but..." She shrugged.

Snickering she nodded, thinking of the crazy Humphrey obsession with their waffle maker. That was one thing she could never figure out. Okay, one of a number of things.

"Well, at least he has better hair. And better taste in clothes. And money. Really, you moved up."

Serena nodded, head tipping to the side, less an agreement than simple acknowledgment that Blair had spoken. Whatever her relationship with Carter in the past and the future, there was no point in dwelling on it now. They were here, not there.

"Yes, well, it's your turn now," she teased. "School's starting soon, it'll be time for a dance and I don't know who you're gonna go with, B."

"A bit fat no one."

While the idea of planning and perfecting a dance right down to the ideal date seemed like teh sort of thing she wanted to do, Blair just couldn't be bothered. No wait, yes she could be bothered but there just wasn't anyone that was jumping out that met her standards. Not anymore at least.

"I have traded in Juliet and Ophelia for Portia."

Serena considered that for a moment, eyes narrowing in confusion. "You're going to start dressing like a man and practicing law?" she asked. "We don't even have laws here." It was nice to hear, though, if bewildering. At least Blair wasn't wasting her time on someone who wasn't right for her.

"By Shakespearean standards I already do. I have been known to break out the skinny jeans on occasion."

Blair was ninety-eight percent certain that wasn't the same thing, but that was detail picking. Minor at least.

"And law has always been a very real possibility as far as career choices go. Stanford Law after Yale undergrad. This island just got in the way."

"True," Serena allowed, because that was the way Blair rolled. A hundred possible careers lay in front of her, each of them geared for power. "The lack of laws makes it hard. And Yale. And Stanford." And Brown, so far as she was concerned. It was disappointing, knowing that this semester would see her back in what was essentially a one-room schoolhouse deal, rather than in Providence. "So Portia, then."

Those were minor details as far as Blair was concerned. They could be achieved if she was simply willing to put a little elbow grease into it. Which she was, minus the actual grease part because that was just gross.

"Yes. Portia. She has a certain sort of unspeakable, I am woman hear me roar, minus the lesbian thing, to her. I like it."

"Good," Serena said firmly, beaming. "You know, I'm really proud of you, B. You've come a long way." Now she was the one in an ages long relationship while Blair floated free, but somehow, she felt the reversal suited them. And Beat wasn't Nate; he wasn't about to do anything behind her back.
