Sunny's of an age now where Geoffrey can read to her and she understands the basics of story and character and even motivation. She might not like the story, she might call it boring and say it doesn't have enough animals or fairies - okay not a valid complaint about the one he's currently reading, but a fair enough point with some - but she understands Shakespeare on at least that basic level.

Sam? Not so much.

"Over hill, over dale,
Thorough bush, thorough brier,
Over park, over pale,
Thorough flood, thorough fire,
I do wander everywhere,
Swifter than the moon's sphere."

Sam seems alert. Sam squirms in Geoffrey's arms and waves his arms and maybe even smiles. Sam... tries to eat the paper Geoffrey's reading.

"Oh, hey, no, yuck," he says, pulling it out of his reach and setting the book on the ground next to them. Reading to him on a blanket outside the compound seemed like a good idea at the time, but maybe Geoffrey would've been better off planting them in the kitchen and letting Sam chow his way through it. "You hungry, or do you just want something to chew on?"

Geoffrey offers him his finger, which Sam promptly starts to suck and gnaw on.

"Well, I guess that answers that question."
