Whenever the island went through another bout of mischief - as he sometimes kindly called it - Dale managed to put in time in the Council office to do whatever needed to be done. Even when he found himself in the body of a toddler he still managed to get his job done. So the fact that he'd spent this latest incidence in what was functionally a coma ( Read more... )

Glen nearly stumbled into the council office looking hurried and disheveled, like a man with an idea that he does not wish to forget but cannot find a piece of paper fast enough. In fact he was looking for paper, but not blank. What Glen needed was numbers and the best place to find them as he knew from his personal dealings, was the council office. It didn't matter that he found himself here everyday, these things never struck you when it was convenient.

He stopped and stared at Dale for a moment before he grinned. "Mr. Cooper. Good to see you as always," he said and started sifting around for what he was looking for.

"And you as well, Glen," he said, ceasing to pace the room and instead turning to face him. "Is there anything I can help you with? I have to be honest, I would welcome the work today."

Glen looked up and paused for a moment looking at Dale. "You know, maybe you can at that." Glen said and straightened up.

"I've been putting together a book, to tell you the truth Mr. Cooper, and I've been attempting to fill in the gaps with a bit of digging around in here, but there are just things that aren't where they ought to be, or aren't there at all. You see my issue?" Glen asked. "And before you ask, yes it is indeed about this place and the people on it. What kind of sociologist would I be if I didn't take advantage of it, hmm?"

"One with all too much time on his hands," said Dale. Too much time and not enough to fill it was one of the primary dangers of the island, in his opinion. "I'd love to hear about your work. I have a set of ears as well as a set of hands that you're free to put to work."

"Well broadly," Glen began, glad as always to have an audience, "I'm attempting to write about the origins of the people here on the island, a simple when and where as folk are a but more prickly about anything else, and what they've made of themselves here. It interests me how many scientists and warriors and other people of such very specific callings have come here. You'd think we were preparing for war with the number of weapons just hanging about," Glen paused just briefly as his mind followed a tangent that he decided for Dale's benefit not to pursue. "At any rate, I'm interested in the origins of the people here and what has become of them despite or because of their background once they feel the influence of the island and its culture."

"Fascinating subject," said Dale, with not a shred of insincerity. "I think it's interesting how many law enforcement personnel, for instance, attempt to reconstruct their careers in some way here on the island. While the need for security is universal, our institutions and ways of life are very different here from what people are often accustomed to."

Glen nodded and gestured his agreement. "Exactly. And yet there are others, warriors in particular, who choose to leave that behind, or feel that they must because there is no need. The reverse of course, is the normal young people from what I think of as a normal Earth background who take up learning from those same people," Glen said. "Most interesting. All of it."

"And I certainly know of some young people from various cultures who have embraced the opportunities open to them here on the island that had not been previously," said Dale. "Now what specifically were you looking for in the records?"

"I'm interested to know who came from where, previous professions, current occupations, families, etcetera. Even the weapons registry is of interest. And while I know of course, that the records we have are volunteered information rather than mandatory, and that much of the information I'm looking for may not be there or complete, it is a decent place to start. I'm at a place in my research where I need data," Glen said mournfully. His writing had been stymied by the simple lack of back data. He could interview folk who would speak to him, but there were so very few people there now that would remember the beginning or close to it.
