The days were becoming shorter and the nights slightly cooler.  While Garak heard many island residents extolling these meterological changes, he could not join them.  He preferred long hot days, even if he wasn't the cold-blooded reptile he had been accused of being.  He would acknowledge that the accusers were possibly not referring to his physical attributes when that accusation was leveled, but of course he had no proof of that minor detail.

At any rate, autumn was certainly coming and with it came the maturity and senescence of many of the fruits and vegetables in the garden.  The crew of island residents that tended it was quite diverse and very thorough, so there weren't many things for a casual grey-thumbed volunteer to do.  Occasionally he did spot an infestation of invasive species, both flora and fauna, but that occurrence was relatively rare.   Today, for example, he was mostly gathering food and edible blossoms in the waning evening light rather than tending to an influx of something.  He was wearing a dark green tunic and pants set that blended well with the plants around him and he almost smiled to himself when he noticed how similar the shades were.   It was nearly always his goal to blend in with his surroundings, but the task was certainly easier in some settings.

Zaibas lolled under a tree near him, panting and showing nearly all of his sharp white teeth.  It wasn't a threat, exactly, but no Cardassian creature was ever unarmed and Zaibas was no exception.  Garak was relatively sure he wouldn't bite anyone or disappear indefinitely, but he glanced up when a twig snapped under someone's foot anyway.  It was ostensibly to see who it was, of course, but he was more concerned about whether Zaibas had slipped into the brush after something again.

If he had, the least he could do would be to bring it back for Garak's dinner.
