There was a point in the day that Samantha was too tired to run around much, but not tired enough to take a nap. Over the two years Jim had raised her, he had learned that just putting her to bed didn't work - she wound herself up crying and wouldn't sleep, anyway. He chose instead to use that time to read to her, when she was calm enough not to ( Read more... )

While Jim was out with Sam, Pam had been in the hut painting, which she'd been planning on doing until he brought Sam back to nap. That changed, though, when she heard him reading outside. She always had loved his impressions, and even more than that, she liked hearing him do voices in stories for Sam. It was simultaneously completely adorable and hilarious.

She'd been standing in the doorway, just out of sight, for probably a few minutes, having abandoned her painting just in time to leave her with a nice streak of green paint by her temple. She hadn't meant to interrupt, but when it got to a point that Jim had to do the voice for Piglet, she couldn't hold back her laughter. It was just too good. "You guys mind some company?" she asked, stepping outside so she could better look at them. "Sorry, I couldn't help overhearing."

Jim hadn't even noticed Pam's presence until she laughed. Tilting his head to the side to look over at her, he couldn't help but smile. He had thought she had gone out earlier.

"Mommy, ti-gur, look!" Sam exclaimed, instantly brightening herself when she saw Pam nearby.

"I'd say neither of us would mind you sticking around," Jim supplied, a grin on his face. "How long have you been listening?"

"Since the last chapter," Pam said with a shrug, as if that wasn't much to have heard at all, taking a seat beside them. "Long enough to have heard Pooh's little song. Daddy did that really well, didn't he, Sammy?" she asked, glancing down at her. Sam nodded enthusiastically, and Pam's smile only widened. "I didn't realize you knew your Disney so well."

"What kid didn't grow up with this cartoon?" he countered, letting out a slightly embarrassed laugh. He really didn't mind looking a little silly, especially in front of Pam. "Christopher Robin used to be on the island, you know. A long time ago."

"You know, I didn't know that, actually," Pam replied thoughtfully, easing a little closer to the two of them so she could get a look at the book herself. "What I do know, though? You do an even better Pooh than you did Stanley. And that's really saying something."

"What I think we should do now is let Mommy try to do voices," he said, looking down at Sam. "Would you like that, Sammy? Do you want Mommy to read now?"

"Uh-huh," she said with a nod, looking up at Pam. Jim bit back a grin as he looked up at her, too.

"I hate you," she said simply, though clearly not sincere, shaking her head a little as she looked at Jim. It only figured that he would say something like that. She didn't really mind, not for Sam, but she would still look ridiculous. Besides, she barely remembered half the voices as it was. "Come on, I don't do imitations half as well as you do and you know it. Maybe I should just read the narration or something."

"No, no, I think Sam wants to hear yours now," he said, matter-of-factly. "It's okay, Pam. Don't be shy. I know how good you are at them."

"I am not!" she protested, mostly teasing, though she reached out to hit him playfully on the arm. "Besides, I don't even remember most of them. I guess I just don't sit around watching Disney in my free time enough, unlike some people."

"You act like I watched it as an adult," he said with a laugh, rolling his eyes. "Just make voices up, then. Sam and I aren't picky."

He held up the book to her, expectant.

"That's because I'm sure you did," Pam said innocently, like that ought to have been obvious. She did take the book, though, well aware that she was about to look completely ridiculous, but conceding only for Sam's sake. "What else would you do in all your free time? It's okay, you don't have to lie to me, I get it."

"Watch really bad reality shows on VH1," he replied, a wry smirk on his face. "Come on, Pam, keep up. What else would I do?"

"I just never pegged you for a fan of Flavor Flav," she quipped, with a smirk that mirrored his. "I don't actually know which is worse, that or the Disney channel."

"He's a genius of our time, Pam," he said, managing to keep a straight face while saying it. "I mean, I wish I thought of wearing a giant clock necklace before."

"I don't know, though, I'm not sure you could pull it off," Pam said, mock-thoughtful, shaking her head. "Maybe if you took up rapping. I mean, you are good at imitations, I'm sure you'd be able to do it if you tried."

"I think I'll leave that to the professionals," he replied, smirking. He knew his limits. "I'm good, but not that good."
