She had only gone to Surreal's hut to check if they could shoot at the archery butts for awhile. The Monday that Cain disappeared left a sick feeling in her chest, and archery seemed a good way to get her mind off of things.  Loss of family wasn't new to Sonya, after all she'd lost a brother and fiance, but she was eighteen when Danniel Blade was ( Read more... )

As there were still places Johnny hadn't quite discovered yet, he found himself wandering the island. He came across Sonya somewhere on the island, gathering various weapons.

"Hey there, whatcha doin'?" He asked, carefully approaching her. Johnny knew better than to sneak up on somebody who was handling weapons, even when it was something like bows.

Sonya looked up from where she was kneeling, smiling a little when she saw who it was.

"A friend of mine's left the island, the only thing left in her hut was her weapons chest," She said, tying the bundle together. "Only right I take them instead of some stranger or just leave them."

Weapons were useful, especially since Sonya no longer had piece or rifle.

Johnny nodded, the memory of Bill disappearing still quite clear. He stood there in silence for several seconds before smiling at Sonya.

"D'ya need help with that?" He asked.

"With this, no," She said, setting the bundle on the ground a moment. "But if you take the rest of what's in the trunk, wrap it in one of the sheets on the window, and help me take them back to my room, I'd really appreciate it."

It'd be done faster that way. Not that Sonya had anything against long trecks, but he did ask and it'd save time.

"Sure, I can do that!"

Grabbing one of the sheets, Johnny proceeded to wrap the rest of the weapons in it before getting up, waiting for Sonya to lead the way.

The rest of the contents of the chest consisted of a few more staffs, arrows and several fighting knives of various sizes.

Sonya waiting until he had them secure for heading back to the compound, occasionally looking over her shoulder as she walked.

Johnny followed her, eventually keeping the same pace as she did. Sonya was quiet, looking on straight ahead, but since she didn't seem in a bad mood, Johnny tried striking up a conversation.

"D'ya have your own hut?"

She shook her head. "I got a room in the compound, nice reminder of back home." Which was ironic since her roommate was terrible at keeping her side of the room clean.

"What about you? Hut or compound?"

"Still livin' at Cain's Homestead, but I'm gonna be movin' in with a buddy o' mine soon." Johnny smiled at the thought.

Sonya felt her throat tighten when he said 'Cain's homestead' and she forced back the feeling, not wanting to think back to Coraline crying in the jungle.

"Why're you moving?" She asked, both from curiosity and to keep herself focused. "I've been to the Homestead a few times," Okay, more than a few. "Seems a nice place to stay."

"A friend of mine, Chuck Grant, d'ya know him? Anyway, Chuck had some sorta-- he was shot in the brain back in Austria an' he's got a bit of a problem 'cause o' that, an' 'sides, we're friends, so we figured we'd move in together." Johnny smiled at the idea of moving in together with Chuck, although the memory of Tab waking all of them to find the sonuvabitch who'd done that to Chuck left a shadow on his smile.

"I've met him on occasion, never personally though." She couldn't help but flinch. "I'd say he got off lucky, I've seen men get shot in the head and survive, but worse off."

"Yeah." Johnny nodded, even though he'd never seen anybody surviving being shot in the head-- every time Johnny had witnessed people getting shot in the head, they'd died right away.

Sonya remained silent for the next five minutes. As much as she didn't like to talk about wounded or dead soldiers, it was a fact of life for her and something she couldn't avoid.

Getting tired of the silence, Johnny spoke up again, "Whaddya plan on doin' with these? I don' suppose ya plan on usin' all o' them on ya own, do ya?"

The compound was just a head.

She did laugh at the thought of her handling them all at once. "No, nothing like that. But this place is unpredictable, and having means of defense that don't require ammunition is something to be grateful for."
