He hadn't planned it this way.
Fiyero had caught some fish for their dinner. He was getting increasing better at it, considering he didn't even know how to swim when he arrived on the island. But instead of taking it up to the Compound to cook, as had been his plan, he was instead gathering firewood for a fire on the beach, Kalm following along obediently behind, occasionally wandering a few feet away to pounce at some small animal.
Elphaba had come across him, looking for Kalm actually but just as happy to find Fiyero and immediately fallen in with the wood gathering plan. Recognizing the lion's pouncing as more play than proper hunting, Elphaba just laughed as the most recent woodland creature escaped the oversized paws. Once there was enough wood, Elphaba left Fiyero to do the actual fire building and went scavenging in the forest for herbs to wrap around the fish, mango to stuff inside for flavor.
Having been delayed by a few stolen kisses in the woods, it was twilight by the time Fiyero had the fire going properly enough to cook with. Then he set to cleaning the fish, giving the bits and pieces to Kalm, who happily did many of his learned tricks to earn them. It was quite a sight to any on looker, a dancing lion by firelight. Then as he handed them over to Elphaba, he went in search of something to add to the atmosphere, his Ipod and speakers.
While she waited for Fiyero to return, Elphaba turned the fish over the flames and sang to Kalm and reflected that two years on, this place was still nothing like home but it was, in the end, exactly what she wanted out of life. When Fiyero came back she got up and ran to him, throwing her arms around him and giving him a solid kiss. "You caught far too many fish," she pointed out cheerfully.
As Elphaba threw her arms around him, Fiyero swung her around in graceful twirled, an often practiced move that still brought him a thrill of joy each and everytime. He was happy here, happier then he ever thought he could be. "Well then, perhaps we should invite people to share it with us," he replied as kissed her again, then let her go to set up the music. Soon, smooth music someone had told him was called jazz filled the night air and he pulled Elphaba down into his lap in the sand by the fire, Kalm curling up beside them as the fish cooked.
