That's funny...we were about to ask you the same question.

As a general rule, when the bookshelf offers me comic books, I tend to ignore them. It's not that I'm not curious -- because I am -- so much as that's really not how I want to learn about my future. I'd rather spend hours digging for a recent newspaper than sit down and read about my life as shown through the lens of dialog bubbles and crappy art ( Read more... )

"It's a comic book," Cable replied helpfully from the seat where he was reading a book of his own.

He finished the page he was on before looking over the book to add, "Personally, I recommend Tintin."

"Wow, Cable. Whatever would I have done if you hadn't been so enlightening?" I deadpan, flashing him an annoyed glance. "I know it's a comic book. It's the story I'm having issues with."

"Anyone I know in it?" he replied casually without taking his eyes from the books he was reading. "Or is that the one where they kill off Veronica?"

If asked he would blame Wade for any knowledge of Archie Comics he might have.

"Well, you know me, but I only show up on the last page," I say, pulling out a chair so I can sit opposite him. "I don't even know these idiots. What I do know is that they're going around killing people and using our name to do it."

He gave her his full attention at that, putting the book down on his knee.

"I can't say I've liked everyone who's used the name X-force myself," he replied slowly. "This anything to do with Osborn?"

"Not that I can tell," I admit, though it's pretty obvious from my tone that I'm not sure that's a good thing. "They seem pretty anti-establishment, but... Look, I get wanting to know your place in the world, but there's such a thing as -- I don't know -- not killing people in some bout of existential angst."

"It happens a lot more than it should," Cable replied. "Spoiled children acting up. Just tell me these ones aren't calling themselves anarchists."

As somebody who wasn't a million miles from an anarchist himself, the misuse of the word really annoyed him.

"No, just Young Avengers," I say, smiling sardonically. "And while I was never crazy about the name, it still stood for something. More than..." I gesture fruitlessly, trying to come up with something more eloquent than "...that."

"There will always be idiots, Kate," he replied. "Especially among the young."

"If they need to be dealt with, I'm sure you'll do just that," he added as he picked his book back up again. It was his habit to do other things while still carrying on conversations. "Their existence doesn't change what the name means."

I bristle a little at the young comment, but I can't deny the man has a point. That's the most frustrating thing about Cable. Sure he says crap that pisses you off, but there's always just enough indisputable truth that you can't disregard it outright.

"Oh, I'm pretty sure we'll deal with, alright," I mutter. "You don't make an entrance like blowing up someone's wall without having an intent to do do something."

That got a smile out of him.

"Makes an impression, at least."

"Hopefully a lasting one," I reply. The guy in the Spidey shirt had a decent head on his shoulders, at least -- well, before he went and melted some poor lady into soup. That's pretty much where he lost my support. The rest of them were written off on the spot. "I wouldn't be opposed to something along the lines of 'you really don't want to $*&! with us.'"

"Certainly, a useful thing to learn," he agreed with the same slight smile as he turned another page in his book.

Too many people thought they were invincible. It had always been a great pleasure for him to teach them otherwise. To show that even the strong were not free from the consequences of their actions.

"Ronin tried to teach me once," I say, leaning back in my chair, the comic held loosely by my fingertips. If Brodie saw me, I'm sure he'd flip his lid, but I'm not a collector so I couldn't care any less. "I wasn't the best student. Hopefully these guys will manage a passing grade."

"Violent revenge fantasies aside," he started, in a tone utterly without judgment, "how have you been Kate?"

I blink slowly at the question. Not because I don't understand it -- it's pretty straightforward -- but because I don't have a clue as to go about answering it. Somehow telling Cable about my teenage drama isn't high on my list of 'things I want to do.'

"...fine."
