Good ol' fashioned picnic

It was a bit odd, really, how he found himself there.

He'd been attempting to teach Austen a trick (And mostly failing, because she seemed determined on doing everything but what she was supposed to be doing), when he'd heard a knock on his door. That, in itself was not unusual. While he might have guiltily acknowledged that he'd become a bit more reclusive once more this month, he did still have visitors, and it was just about afternoon. The odd part was that his visitor turned out to be none other than Doctor Elizabeth Weir, with whom he'd rarely spoken with during his time on the island.

Her smile had been mildly disturbing. Reserved, diplomatic, commander types should not be capable of such mischievous amusement. For a moment, he'd even considered that something was wrong with the Island's residents once more, but the smile properly justified soon enough. How the woman kept track of the days so precisely, he was not certain, and he wasn't entirely sure he wanted to know. He supposed she was the sort of woman who would be capable of such meticulous records...or perhaps she'd simply wrested something with a calandar out of the bookcase. It wasn't his place to ask.

The point was, she'd tracked a day he hadn't even considered since arriving on the island, and given that he had an open afternoon, it was his obligation to make something of it. There wasn't so much he could do without prior notice, but fortunately, she had come willing to lend a hand, and before long they had sweet pastries in the oven, and were working on a fruit salad. Doctor Weir wasn't so bad a helping hand, once given a general idea what was necessary, and they managed to get through preparing their impromptu meal in record time.

Once the baked goods were finished, they carefully carried the pies (and a few fruit cookies Doctor Weir's mother had a recipe for) and the fruit and vegetable salads they'd managed to prepare back to the picnic tables of New Atlantis. The last step was perhaps the most patchwork of all, but it was really the thought that counted. While Doctor Weir worked on setting up the existing lunch ingredients for the picnic tables, he worked on setting up the fire-pit to scorch what leftovers of boar meat he could scrounge up, for a touch of 'barbecued' meat to finish it. It was really the part he was most dubious about, because...barbecuing really wasn't his thing, but the good doctor evidently hadn't earned her diplomatic positions purely on good looks. She was annoyingly convincing.

Such was how he found himself there, squatting in front of the New Atlantis fire pit, eying it with consideration, and attempting to determine how exactly he was going to execute his plan. Apparently Doctor Weir's assistance ended with setting up the food, because now she stood at the covered area, arms crossed and observing with what might he might've guessed was amusement, if he had to make a determination.

If her calculations had been wrong, and the rest of New Atlantis were out doing things...or possibly eating at a properly set up barbecue, there would be one hell of a lot of goodies and appetizers to split between two people. Unsurprisingly, she didn't seem to be concerned with that possibility in the least.

[OOC: Joint EP! Cam and Elizabeth both in New Atlantis, with food, for a bit of an impromptu Memorial Monday picnic.Tag either, tag both, mock Cam's inability to barbecue. There's Cam's general run of goods--pie, coffee cakes, and fig cookies (Elizabeth's, rather than his). There's also two bowls of fruit salad (One with citrus, one without), and one bowl of vegetable salad. There's meat...should he ever succeed...but not a whole lot of it. Gathering post, so also tag around. Anyone, even non NA residents are welcome. It's set mid-to-late afternoon of the 25th, and unplanned and unannounced, of course, but they were in the kitchen cooking for quite a bit, and would have cheerily mentioned what they were doing to anyone who asked. Anyone offering food or a hand with the puzzle of the fire pit will be much appreciated by both pups. ST/LT open]
