Az knew she shouldn't have been interested, but she was despite herself. She had come to the bookshelf with the definite purpose of finding more books on advanced chemistry because the ones she had received with her gift in the beginning of the year were now woefully inadequate. But on her way to choosing something heavy and scientific her eye was drawn to something else entirely. Something glossy and thin and colorful. Seventeen, the cover said and Az hesitated, about to put it back. After all, she was still two years short of that age. But surely that couldn't stop her from reading one ridiculously thin magazine. And besides, it mentioned hairstyles on the cover. She couldn't pass that up.
Two hours later and Az had quite the collection of magazines piled around her. They stretched from the sixties to the mid-nineties, but she read them all equally. There had been just so much she hadn't known about before; proms and rockstars and fashion models and dieting and exfoliating and eyeshadow and quizzes.
The quizzes were especially informative and Az eagerly moved on to a new one. She hadn't brought anything to write with, but they were easy enough to keep track of in her head. So far she had already discovered what her best feature was (her eyes), how popular she was (78%), which Beatle was he perfect match (Paul), which new summer trend she should try (a tie between fringe miniskirts and moussed hair), what color her room should be (aqua), and where she should go on vacation (Paris). The next one was to find out if 'he' really liked her. And she was decidely more interested in what it would say than any of the others before it.
"'When you see him, the first thing you say is? A.) Hello. B.) Nothing. C.) Start telling him how class was and recount the entire day. D.) Compliment him.' Hmm... 'When he sees you, the first thing he says is...'"
