When Mal woke up, bright n' early in his bunk, he knew somethin' was diff'rent -- n' diff'rent was good. He felt 'live, more 'live than he had in his three-plus years on this tropical paradise o' n' island. 'twas goin' t' be a fine day; he jus' knew it.

Seein' as how River was still 'sleep, Mal stole out o' bed real quiet-like n' went t' Serenity's kitchen. Though they didn't have much in the way o' food on Serenity like there was up in the compound kitchen, he somehow managed t' put t'gether a real colorful n' tasty breakfast tray for River, whistlin' a real jaunty tune all the while. He left it on the foot o' the bunk, 'long with some flowers he'd gone out n' picked, n' a note he'd written that she'd likely find most 'ppealin', complete with XOXOs at the bottom -- because in Mal's mind XOXO mean real powerful deep love, n' he ought t' 'xpress t' River at all times jus' how much she meant t' him.

After he left the bunk for a second time, it 'curred t' Mal that Serenity needed some brightenin' up. There weren't 'nough color, n' that was plain wrong. He fired up the mule, thinkin' he'd go out n' 'bout in the jungle lookin' for some colorful plants t' bring 'board. Simon Chicago barked n' Mal laughed; o' course he needed a companion!

"Jus' wait," he murmured, n' dis'ppeared down int' the bunk one last time. He re'ppeared with a flimsy scarf he'd spied in a trunkful o' River's thin's n' tied it 'bout the dog's neck. Simon Chicago whimpered some but Mal only laughed. "Y' look all respectable-like now," he said, n' then the pair o' 'em hopped in the mule.

'long the way t' the jungle, Mal waved at passersby on the beach, callin' out, "Ni hao there, friend!" t' whoe'er he saw. Mal n' Simon Chicago spent a long mornin' in the jungle, gatherin' foliage that was big n' bright, settin' it in the back o' the mule. When the midday sun began t' beat down, Mal decided they ought t' take a break.

They went t' the compound, parked the mule outside ('llowin' it t' hover near the trampoline), n' went in the kitchen for some eats. Mal became the life o' the party real quick-like, tellin' stories o' darin' space mishaps with charm n' humor.

[Find Mal in the kitchen or coming outside of the compound. He's SUPER FRIENDLY, lulz
