Aya's day started out like normal. He ate breakfast, more out of habit than hunger since his appetite hadn't been very good lately anyway, and then he went for his usual circuit around the Island with the intention of ending up at his hut. Perhaps he would go and get lunch, though he really didn't feel like running into anyone at the moment. Only those who knew him very well would have any idea he still wasn't quite over Hayley's disappearance. At least he had the school to distract him, but sometimes thoughts about all of the things he had done in his past would come back up and made him question what he should be doing. He had been far worse though he supposed and slowly he was attempting to deal with everything and put what he could behind him. He wasn't very good at it, but trying made him feel at least a little accomplished.
It was halfway back to his hut that he saw it. At first it seemed odd simply because he couldn't imagine why there would be a bed out in the middle of the trees, but it wasn't any of his business. At least he didn't think it was until he noticed the cut in the mattress. A perfect cross. It had been years since he had seen it and even though he knew his sister was safe that didn't stop his breath from catching as he stared at it. How had it gotten there? Why? He knew he couldn't move it on his own and he didn't want to touch it anyway. He was tempted to simply keep walking and pretend he hadn't seen it, but he couldn't tear his eyes from it. He kept telling himself that he had saved her, that she had woken up. He tried to convince himself everything was fine, but it wasn't quite working as the bed reminded him of the failures of his past.
He wasn't sure how much time had passed as he continued to try and puzzle out what was going on and what he was going to do about it.
