Horatio sat with Edward in the shallows of the pool. The waterfall churned steadily down, but here the water was calm, the coolest place they could be on a hot day outside of the Compound

"You're just doing that so he'll be able to drown all your enemies one day with one might splash," Joe decided as he approached the waterfall, then sat down at the edge. He was gonna get wet here, he could fucking see it, but it was kind of hard to care when the person doing the splashing was Edward.
"And is that so very wrong?" Horatio asked, angling Edward into a position more likely to soak Joe's shirt. "Deprived of a gun ship, I may at least have a formidable baby."
"Hey, since when am I the enemy?" Joe asked with a snort of laughter, just as he was doused with a healthy splash of water. It was just part of island living, though, and he didn't seem to care much. "Just wait until you're in the line of fire, man."
"I've been in the line of fire all afternoon," said Horatio, spitting out another mouthful of water to prove it. "I think he's taking to the water rather well."
"Yeah, looks like he's pretty damn happy there," Joe agreed, finally giving in and taking off his boots and socks so he could hang his feet into the water. If he was gonna get wet, he might as well go with it. "Swimming first and then sailing?"
"That is indeed the plan," said Horatio. "William does not yet know it, but he shall be a key figure in effectuating it."
He swam closer, beckoning to draw Edward's attention to Joe's toes, which simply must be tugged on. Edward studied them gravely before reaching a chubby arm towards them.
"And he'll grumble about it, but he won't refuse," Joe answered with a smirk, watching Edward study his feet. He'd never imagined himself here, on this island, surrounded by people he liked and their children.
"Shit, he's cute, isn't he?" he asked, lifting his foot closer so Edward could grab onto his toes.
Edward took hold of Joe's big toe and grinned, a low chortle emerging from his little throat. "I believe he wants to drag you in," mused Horatio. "He'd make an excellent float, wouldn't he, Edward?"
"Yeah, but I'm not wearing my trunks," Joe pointed out and although he said in a voice directed at Edward, he was looking at Horatio. "So your dad shouldn't get any smart ideas."
