Horatio sat with Edward in the shallows of the pool. The waterfall churned steadily down, but here the water was calm, the coolest place they could be on a hot day outside of the Compound ( Read more... )

Cameron had spent so much of her past couple of days stalking around in a rage that was, if not black, pretty damn dark. It wasn't like her, and she'd been purposely avoiding anyone who knew her.

She'd been running, and she pulled up to a stop by the waterfall, kicking off her shoes and stepping in until she was up to her thighs.

At the sound of a voice, she glanced over, and the tight twist of her mouth relaxed. "He looks like he likes it," she said.

"It may very well be the noise," said Horatio, though privately he was clinging to the idea that Edward liked the water.

He looked over at her, trying to be subtle but it was too late. Edward had noted her as well, and was now happily pounding water in her direction. "Oh," said Horatio, catching at his hands. "Forgive us, he's too young yet for manners."

"I don't think so," Cameron said, managing a smile. As the water splashed at her, she laughed, a sound she'd almost forgotten in herself, what with wallowing in misery. "Besides, maybe he can just tell I'd like to be cheered up."

She gravitated a little closer.

"Ah, he's very good at that," said Horatio, turning the floaty so that Edward needn't twist round to face her.

"My husband and I argue forty percent less since his arrival." That was true. He'd calculated it.

Cameron actually laughed, a sudden, bright sound. "Your husband's a lucky guy, to have the two of you. Do you do a lot of domestic percentages?" She reached out, her hand almost shy, to touch the curve of the baby's head.

Horatio nodded, confessing, "I can't help myself. I am fortunate to have an indulgent partner." Ray was more likely to calculate happiness in cups of coffee than actual, but he never poked fun. Not terribly much, at least.

Edward looked surprised at the sudden touch to his head, bursting into a shriek of laughter when he located the source.

She couldn't help the tiny flash of sadness in her eyes. After all, she was alone again (naturally). Great for self pity, but at least she could look at these two and say it was the idea she was missing at the moment, not any one person. Some sadness, as well, that she'd never gotten to know this kind of life with her husband.

"I'm Allison," she said.
