It was not a good day to spend time outdoors. In fact, it was cloudy and a little windy and the scent of imminent rain was on the air. Still, Dale had an itch not to be cooped up in an office all afternoon. And so after composing a clear note to post up on the door of the Council office (not only indicating his location should anyone need his services, but also including a detailed map), he put on his coat, grabbed his book, and headed out to the side of the compound.
There he set up a little picnic site under the apple trees - a coat instead of a blanket and coffee instead of lemonade - and admired the view from his makeshift office for a moment. Far from the concrete walls of the compound he could now look out on the garden and the orchard and the well-travelled path the led through it up towards the mountain.
While he was sure that something would draw him back indoors before the afternoon had passed, for now he could sit and contemplate his book, the mysteries of the universe, and the tremendous potential of William's new printery. A man really couldn't complain about a life that could be spent like that.
