Monday Breakfast

Ever since the night of speed dating, Jen has been working to keep herself occupied to try not to think about the curling lessons that may or may not actually happen. She's been trying not to get her hopes up too much, telling herself it's just a silly thing and was probably just said in passing. Quilting has been helping her a lot in her effort to stay busy - she'd done Priestly's quilt after she'd finished her own, and just last week she started to work on Remy's. Classes, too, all of which she's enjoying. She keeps telling herself it's no big deal, but it doesn't stop her from thinking about it...though the nagging guilt she feels whenever she remembers Fuzzy back home makes her wonder what the hell she's doing.

Being on the kitchen crew also gives her something to do, something she enjoys, and she's chopping fruit and chatting with Priestly to keep herself from glancing at the door every thirty seconds to check and see if a certain Canadian is walking in. "What do you think for the main course today?" she says, once she's recovered enough from her laughter at the hilarious joke he just made. "We haven't done omelet bar in a while. Or I think there's enough bread for french toast."

"I think I want to make pancakes," he says after examining their options. "Fruit pancakes. In shapes. I could probably do shapes to order, too, unless people are going to order weird shapes just to trip me up. And really, what are the odds of someone ordering up a pancake Mona Lisa, right? I mean, who really wants to eat someone's face? Other than cannibals, and I don't think we have any cannibals on the island. And even if we do, they're probably not going to be ordering fruit pancakes for breakfast. Right?"

"Yeah, fruit pancakes are a great idea," Jen says, always amused when Priestly goes off on a tangent like that. "And hey, I'm already getting the fruit ready for you, so there's that. Shapes are good, too. I'm pretty sure you won't have to worry about any cannibals ordering the Mona Lisa. You could do, I don't know, Mickey Mouse or something."

"I could make whatever people wanted," he says, starting to get his ingredients together on the countertop. "Okay, maybe I couldn't make everything well, but I'd be willing to give it a go anyway. I mean, what are people really going to ask for anyway? They're going to ask for, like, hearts, and rabbits and happy faces and shit. It'll be a piece of cake. A piece of pan-cake."

"Exactly," Jen says, pushing the strawberries she's just sliced up into a pile with her knife. "Plus, you make the best pancakes, so even if they look like The Blob they'll still taste good."
