It had been a good plan at the time. He was hot, he was going home from training, he was filthy, and the waterfall was right there. Yeah, it had been a good plan when he'd thought of it. He'd shamelessly stripped his shirt off and dropped it at the top of the falls, then picked his way carefully down to the ledge that jutted out high above the pool ( Read more... )

I had watched the dive with appreciation, but thought he'd done the whole thing on purpose. Now, watching him soak there with that look that meant wheels were turning, I was less sure.

"The flaw in the plan," I said, "is that now you have to climb back up and get them."

He couldn't help but chuckle and he turned to see who had caught him. When he saw Bagoas, he smiled even brighter.

"Yeah, that'd be a flaw in the plan," he agreed. "Good thing I'm not shy, right?"

I laughed. "As brazen as a Greek," I assured him. It was not the first time I had said those words to him. "But it might not be comfortable, I think."

"I'm going to take that as a compliment," he replied. "I was trying to think of what my options were. I could just walk home, although I'm almost positive someone might notice and disapprove."

I sat down on the edge of the bank to watch him. "It would no doubt be the one time you came upon a mob of children. Or got bit by something."

"A mob of children?" Jack chuckled. "Are they forming packs, now? No, it'd be more my luck to run into someone who would think it was intentional. Wouldn't be the first time I'd gotten locked up for public indecency." he winked and his grin widened. It wouldn't even be the second time. In fact, he'd have to give it some real thought if he wanted an accurate number.

I sniffed, and batted a hand against the surface of the water to splash at him. "If you make fun of my speaking," I told him pertly, "I will climb up that rock and take your clothes myself."

He laughed a little harder and held up his hand to block the water, although it did no good.

"I'm not, I'm not," he insisted.

"Good!" I would probably not really have done it, if only because I had no desire to go climbing, but he did not need to know that. If he did not already.

"If I was, you'd know," Jack teased, flicking water at him with just his fingertips. "But you're nice not to tease my Persian," he said, then shook his head. He really needed to speak it more so he didn't make such stupid mistakes.

I wondered if there would ever be a time when the sound of my nativ tongue would not make me feel as if the sun had just come on, no matter what mistakes there might have been. "I am," I agreed in the same. "But I think that is not the help you need just now!"

He could only shake his head slowly, then look up at the ledge again.

"Maybe not. I can't say I like the idea of any sort of a mob catching me without pants."

That made me laugh, I had no choice. "Do you not? I feel as if that should surprise me."

"And yet? I can tell you're not shocked at all," Jack said. "I wonder why that is?"

I took a moment to pull off my shoes so I could dangle my feet in the water. "Perhaps I know you well."

"I don't think there's any 'perhaps' about it," he replied, reaching over to grab him by the ankle and tug playfully. "You should come in the water."
