Things had been going so well.

Okay, maybe "well" was a bit of an exaggeration, but things were a decent approximation of well. Nothing was blowing up and no one was in mortal peril, which was the best Pepper could hope for on any given day. It was all about perspective, really.

She wasn't crying. Yet. That was a relief. "Hey," he greeted, a little cautious since he still didn't have any tissues. If this was about Tony Stark or some other man not wanting to marry her, he was at least more well versed in that than he was a few days ago. That idea, however, was tossed away as quickly as it had come to him.

Oh wonderful, it was the comics lover. Not that the compassion wasn't appreciated, but it was so completely weird having someone admiring her because she'd apparently been depicted in a comic book doing things she had no recollection of.

"Hello," Pepper replied after a polite clearing of her throat. "Don't mind me, I'm just mourning the lost efforts of Manolo Blahnik." She held up what was left of the shoe to clarify.

"Hey, I remember - " Seth's index finger was poised in an a-ha! gesture that slowly lowered back with the rest of his digits when he saw the vestiges of what could have very well been the world's sexiest shoes. Next to Summer's pink heels when her toes were painted all cutely, that was.

"...those," he finished with a grimace and a pop of his index fingers and thumbs, then a clap of his palm against his opposite fist. "Hey, if it's any consolation, you have really cute feet."

Pepper laughed at that, appreciative of Seth's efforts. "Thank you, you're sweet," she replied, and then resigned herself to get over the loss and back to being practical again. She pushed herself to her apparently cute feet and climbed back up onto the boardwalk. "I guess they were impractical anyway," she sighed with a disappointed look down to the shoes in her hands.

Pepper Potts thought he was sweet. Yeah, he'd take it. He nodded his ear toward his shoulder and smiled crookedly - Well, I try. "You know, my..." girlfriend, Seth. "Summer, mygirlfriend, might be able to help you with those. She knows a lot, a lot about shoes."

"Unfortunately, unless she knows a lot about shoe repair, I'm afraid it's a lost cause. I'm not even sure where the heel went, so it's probably better to just get over it," Pepper replied with a polite smile. "I do appreciate the tip, though."

"She might surprise you," Seth said, just a little underneath his breath. No, he wasn't bitter about the whole Brown thing. Why would he be? "If you're going somewhere, I can walk you, make sure you don't step on any glass with your feet. These people can be pretty careless."

Pepper smiled with a knowingly flattered duck of her head. She'd not point out what a rare commodity glass was on the island in general. "That's very thoughtful of you, Mr. Cohen, thank you." She'd also not point out that she was technically old enough to be his mother. At least, not yet.

It was on the tip of Seth's tongue to tell her that his father was Mr. Cohen, but that was just the cheesiest line he could have thought of in that moment. So, he responded to that by offering her the crook of his arm. Mr. Cohen's Escort Service. No, no, that wasn't right either.

"Call me Seth." Yes, that was just right. "What do I call you? Pepper or Ms. Potts?" Emphasis on the Ms., of course.

It was all very endearing, really, and went quite a long way to making Pepper feel good about herself (Which, while not entirely needed, certainly didn't go amiss after her birthday), but it was with some considerable restraint that she tamped down her need to grin or laugh at the situation. He was offering her his arm. How unbearably sweet.

"Seth it is, then," she assented, and curled her hand gently around the proffered arm. "And anything you prefer to call me is fine."
