Growing up, Jill hadn't been a particularly great student, but she'd also been one of those kids who could often be seen wandering down the sidewalk or across the playground with a book held in front of her face. She'd always loved reading and while the material had changed over the years, the book was still firmly in the place it had always been. Meandering down the boardwalk in the direction of the beach, with vague, half-formed plans of spending some time there, Jill was engrossed in a medical virology textbook.

It was the reason she didn't realize that she was wandering toward the edge of the boardwalk rather than turning with it. It was the reason she slipped right off the edge, her sandal falling off her foot as she dropped the textbook and reeled for a moment, trying to catch her balance. The book hit the dirt a second before her foot scraped over the edge of the boardwalk and Jill sat down heavily, wincing in pain.

"Goddammit," she muttered, frowning down at the book before she lifted her foot gingerly, crossing it over her knee so she could see the damage. She was bleeding and there was a splinter embedded in the sole of her foot, but it didn't look too bad. She could probably make it back to the Compound if she was careful.

At least she hadn't fallen on her ass in the dirt and twisted her ankle. A small mercy, but it was better than nothing. She just hoped no one had seen her spectacularly stupid stumble.
