I didn't know you could stop being a god...

Delirium rarely dreamed but when she did the dreams were vivid and colourful. Cannibal balloon men tearing each other apart and feasting on long balloon intestines filled with cotton candy. A woman standing at the edge of a cliff before falling into a sea of red horses. A child dressed in a purple playsuit with a television aerial sticking out of ( Read more... )

"Del."

It was difficult not to hear the screaming and so she went and she saw and she frowned both at the book and the chain. A hand found Del's cheek, brushed her hair, tried to soothe.

"Del," she murmured. "We'll get it off."

It wasn't her burden to bear. It wasn't hers to carry. She couldn't even lift the damned thing it was bigger than her torso. So big. So heavy. "iT WAS cruShing me, whAT if it Hurt Danny aND aBBY?"

Wordless for a moment, she knelt and peered at the chain, then the cuff, trying to figure out if there was anything she could do about it as she murmured softly. Some things came from home, tried to squash people, tried to hurt them.

Her fingers curved against Del's abdomen.

"I'll get this off," she whispered, her fingers on the chain. "They'll be okay, they'll be fine. You have strong babies, Del." There had to be something she could do. "I'll make everything okay, I swear."

"StROng and HEaLThy," Delirium said though her heart was fluttering and she was panicked. She couldn't have the book. It wasn't hers to have. It wasn't hers to read. It shouldn't be here, it was all wrong. "aLL WrOng. It caN'T be hERe, it CAN't, hE can'T GivE it away-Can'T- cAN't. NOt eVEN iF he diES. it SHouLDN't be heRe."

If she calmed down they would be able to ease it off maybe with a little difficulty but that was like trying to convince a screaming child that it wanted to stop throwing a tantrum. A lot harder than it sounded.

"Shhh," she murmured, unable to do more than curl around her and lend her what strength she had. "Del, Del, slow down for me. Slow down. I know you can do that for me." Reese buried her lips against Del's temple and murmured soothingly, as soothingly as she could. "Slow down. Tell me about the book, about why it's scary, about what it is. Tell me and we'll take it off, we'll get it off."

"iT's thE bOOK OF Destiny. evErythiNG thAT has HAPPenED, evERything that wiLL HAPPen... iT'S GOt thE uNivERse insiDe it anD it sHOULDn't bE heRe." Delirium said trying to calm down, trying to listen to Dani. She knew she had to be calm or the babies would feel it, would get distressed and that was bad. Taking deep breaths, she pressed back against Dani and tried not to look at it. It would go away. It couldn't be here. "HE caN't tAKE iT off, it shOULDn't be heRe... iT's wRong."

She curled herself snugly against Del and pressed her lips against her temple, running her free hand through the woman's hair gently, evenly as she murmured.

"You know this Island, sweetheart. You know it takes things from home," she said softly. "Yeah, it's probably pretty damn wrong for it to be here, but the Island was wrong for taking us. Alotta things are wrong and alotta things are right." She took a breath and steadied herself, remained solid and calm. "I don't remember who told me, but someone once said that we're back in our Universes going about our normal things like we never left. This book, it's back where it belongs, doing what it's meant to do, chained to someone else's wrist, just like there's a you back where you came from doing what you're supposed to be doing. Shhh, shhh. We can take the chain off, we can do that."

She hadn't understood anything then but know she understood and she understood that the book was wrong. It shouldn't be here. The book containing the universe should not be here. It was wrong. Wrong. Wrong. Wrong. With Capitals. "cAN we TaKe it OFF nOWS PLeASe?"

"We can take it off," she murmured against Del's temple. Her fingers brushed and stroked Del's cuffed hand. "We'll get it off." She refused to leave her there, though. Reese drew a breath in and tried to carefully inch the metal from her wrist and over her hand. Carefully. Very carefully. She wanted her gun so she could shoot the chain off -- it would have been the best use of her firearm on the island. Reese murmured gently as she worked, her hum soft and easy, as soothing as she could possibly be.

She hated that it was probably going to hurt coming off.

But all things hurt coming off.

"Yeah," she whispered after a moment. "There's an aspect of us doing stuff. Different choices, different outcomes. One moment, infinite outcomes. My partner...my partner would probably enjoy hearing me say that."
