Recently, things on the island had been quite odd. Jim had always been a part of her life here, ever since the moment she fell into the pool of the waterfall, completely soaking her clothing so that she was forced to dry off. Their kiss had been just the beginning of what turned into the best thing to ever happen to her, save her arrival on the island in the first place. However, the appearance of the ring, perceived mistakenly by Cecily to be an engagement ring, had mace everything they had together fall apart. Life in the hut was awkward, quiet, and often lonely after her hopes of marriage were once again crushed. They did not sleep together anymore, barely spoke, and they hardly seemed like a couple at all.

She walked along the beach, gently brushing her bare feet into the cool ocean, contemplating all that the infernal ring had brought about in her relationship with Jim. She never wore it, although it was quite beautiful, for it seemed to represent all the ill-tempered feelings that had grown between the two of them. With the date of Penny's wedding approaching, Cecily was unable to remove the idea of marriage and children from her mind, which only seemed to make the entire situation worse. She could not bear the way Jim and her acted around each other now, avoiding gazes, staying silent for fear of what they might say by mistake, those three words they once uttered so often never coming up anymore. Perhaps forgiveness was in order, for Jim had made no mistake, but how could she stay with him when they did not wish for the same things?

At that moment Cecily began to cry. She sat down on the damp shore and wrapped her legs in tightly around her. She placed her hands against her eyes and tried to regain composure, hoping that no one would walk by and see her so weak. Still, she could not stay in the hut if he was there, and she needed to rid herself of all the turmoil inside of her. Where else could she turn, if not the bright and sunny beach?
