Lionel isn't sure why he's even brought out his old camera in the first place; it's not as if he can take any pictures that won't do anything but sit on a roll of film he can't develop. It's probablya bit for nostalgia's sake - taking Mark's cinematography class has been putting him more in mind of his own college years. It isn't homesickness so

Kate's just about to raise her voice to say hello when she witnesses the whole thing which, frankly, looks like something she'd do. It's on the tip of her tongue to say something snarky when she notices the broken camera.

"Shit," she whispers, walking over slowly towards Lionel. "Is it broken?"

A small part of Lionel feels being witnessed in his clumsy moment is almost worse than his camera being broken. At least it's just Kate.

He nods in reply, and holds the camera up carefully so she can see the cracked lens. "Seven years back luck, you think? Or maybe just three and a half?"

"I'm so sorry," she murmurs as she runs a finger along the thin crack. "That was from back home, yeah? I blame the cat."

[lionelthayer]

"I haven't used it in a while," Lionel says, both answering Kate's question and explaining something he doesn't have to. He isn't really sure what else to say. "I'm fine with blaming the cat."

[new_ophelia]

"What were you doing with it, anyway?" she asks, patting his shoulder. "All I saw was you and the cat and then disaster.

[lionelthayer]

"I don't know, I guess I was feeling a bit nostalgic," Lionel admits, ignoring the bit about disaster. He'd like to not think about how he'd just nearly tripped over a cat. "Then I guess I got a little carried away," he added, gesturing to the piles of books on the table."

"God, all it'll give me lately is breastfeeding books," Kate huffs as she looks the books over. "It gave Jack porn the other day. I think it was trying to tell me something."

[lionelthayer]

Lionel's eyebrows rise, and it takes all he can not to laugh. "I know Peter already offered to babysit, if you guys need some alone time."

"Yeah, it just took me a while to get to the point where I'd accept the help," she admits as she thumbs through a portrait book. "Jack's kind of had his hands full dealing with me, lately."

[lionelthayer]

"We'll wean you off the baby eventually," Lionel jokes, but he means the comfort when he slides an arm around her shoulders. "You doing okay?"

"No," she laughs, settling her head against Lionel's side, as always feeling Sam's absence acutely. Even just for a short while. "But making Jack feel like shit isn't going to make me less crazy. I'm lucky I've got someone like him."

[lionelthayer]

"You're both lucky," he replies, having already decided that the last thing he'll ever do is take sides. "Let's find something to distract you."

[new_ophelia]

"Let's do that," she agrees, giving him a quick kiss on the cheek. "I'm a little nuts and you tripped over a cat. I think we could both use a distraction. Or, of course, you could just tell me all about how you and Peter are doing. I have to admit, that if I weren't married and he wasn't gay, well...the speaking Italian thing is really attractive."

Lionel is perfectly happy to move on from the cat incident. "We're doing just fine, thanks," he says, squeezing Kate a little. "Try not to ogle my boyfriend too much, huh? Being a married woman, and all."

[new_ophelia]

"It's not my fault," she insists, linking her arm through his. "Come on, let's take this stuff outside. It's actually pretty nice, today. And I am being a totally normal person and not at all pining for my baby."

[lionelthayer]

"You're just a sucker for an accent, I know," Lionel sighs. Gathering up what books he can, Lionel hands Kate a few to carry, glad he hadn't gone too overboard.
