If only because she could not escape the dual ghosts of her mother and the Queen of France taking her to task for ignoring an event, Anne had put on a lovely green dress and stopped by the Mardi Gras party. No mask, so that her presence could be noted by anyone who wished to, and then she left, for she could not abide any more of that foolish ( Read more... )

Lyanna was talking aloud to her three-month old child, pointing out all the little things throughout the building that made it less of a dreary, foreign place and more of a second home to her. When she came into the rec room she pointed out the jukebox, the shelves, the table, the piano, and when she spotted the noblewoman, Lyanna smiled and took her daughter's little fingers to point first at the woman, then at her own modest dress.

"Blue," she named the color they both wore. Hers was not nearly so lavish and rich, but blue all the same. A pale version. Ygraine waved her little hands with glee. "My daughter admires your gown, lady."

Anne smiled at the child, and then the mother. While once the sight would have set her teeth on edge, Anne felt mostly a vague nostalgia for her lost chance at motherhood. If only she'd been allowed to hold Elizabeth so....

Wandering closer, Lyanna replied, "Oh, but I would not call them outlandish." Wiping at her daughter's mouth with a clean handkerchief, she added, "I know a woman who would find your fashions entirely to her taste. It would have pleased my father to see me so comfortable as you in your splendor."

"But it would not have pleased you," Anne guessed. "And that is a sin much greater than meat on a Friday, I think. I've quite a few people here who have scolded me for continuing to dress like this in the island heat." She smiled, and gestured towards the seat next to her. "Will you sit?"

She nodded once. "A tale told by many women here. There is nothing so special in that," Lyanna assured her as she moved closer to sit. Ygraine took her this shift in position with wandering eyes, interested, but only fleetingly as she began to poke at her own toes. "I cannot imagine you respond well to a good scolding, lady," she mused, seemingly approving of this assumption.

"But I do invite it, apparently," laughed Anne. "The trick, I've found, is to be as headstrong and stubborn as you wish, but not to appear so if possible." In retrospect, she might have treated her damnable uncle better with this clarity.
