If only because she could not escape the dual ghosts of her mother and the Queen of France taking her to task for ignoring an event, Anne had put on a lovely green dress and stopped by the Mardi Gras party. No mask, so that her presence could be noted by anyone who wished to, and then she left, for she could not abide any more of that foolish ( Read more... )

Frankly, Sonya was ashamed that even after a party, she wasn't able to get a decent nights sleep. Her dreams, once made of twisted past memories, were now of parties and battle celebrations in blood, dark read and the decorations consisting of torn bodies.

She was also feeling more worn out, and so that was why she made another trip to the bookshelf, dressed in the military trousers and tank top in order to grasp any sense of self.

Unfortunately, the bookshelf saw fit to give her books on famous (and dangerous) queens and kings, and magazines and books on weddings.

'When the Emperor takes over your sad realm, I will take you as my queen. I cannot have such a fighter as you perish in Kahn's tournament, it would be a waste.'

She finally settled on The Art of War before going over to the couch, but not before doing a double take at the dark haired woman on the couch. Blue, dark hair, obviously some nobility of a sort..Sonya thought back to Kitana, princess of Outworld and assassin for Kahn, but rumor had it that she was falling out of favor.

Sonya shook those thoughts away.

One of Kara's? She certainly had the look, but Anne felt mature enough these days to ask before judging. At any rate, there were more than a few of these women running around in men's clothes and looking sullen. While a courtier might not have been so different from a woman soldier, a courtier at least had the sense to smile all the harder if she was put on the run.

"You look tired," she said, though kindly. "Perhaps it is rest you should be seeking, and not a book."

Sonya scolded herself for letting her exhaustion show, but fighting it was only making her more exhausted.

She straighten her back against the couch, though it was probably too late to hide it. "I've looked worse," was her sore attempt at humor. "and if they have anything here for dreamless sleep, I'm sure there are people worse off who could use it."

"Oh, my," Anne said mildly. "Why punish others when you can punish yourself, I see. It's a nice idea, but there really are too many other people in the world who would happily take that over for you."

Well, she did have a point about that last part. "I'm making up for the people who've suffered dearly for my screw-ups." Yes, it was blunt, but that was Sonya for you, never be subtle for what was obvious.

"And that will restore everything as it should be? It will bring the dead back and mend all the broken hearts?" Anne simply shook her head. "What is done is done, and it cannot be gone back to and fixed. The only way is forward, and if you shackle yourself on the journey, you shall never get there."

"I know that, but try telling my subconscious. It hasn't given me a peaceful nights sleep in..oh, about a month." And she couldn't blame the shadow priests that had maged her dreams in Outworld. "It's easier back home, when a mission or two forces you to think on the task at hand."

"It won't restore anything, you're right. but if I'd done my job properly, it would possibly keep the men responsible from taking even more lives." Or worse, in Shang Tsung's case.
