By the time the first tent had been successfully pitched, Shawn was ready to crawl into it, curl up and call it a day. Too bad there were only about a million other things to do before the show got on the road. Okay, so maybe it was less than that, but it sure felt like it was somewhere in the vicinity of a million.
Someone really should have warned him about how much work this was all going to be. Shawn might have...considered reconsidering. In the end, though, he would have gone through with it anyway, he knew it, just to prove that someone - first name Doubting, last name Thomas, he bet - wrong. Oh, and for the children. Or something. Kids first, vindication second; kids first, vindication second, he repeated over and over again. It would sink in eventually.
Because the pseudo-psychic’s personal definition of 'roughing it' was lined with baby pink Egyptian cotton, the camp site wasn’t too far a hike from the compound; civilization was just a hop, skip and a jump away. Kids were supposed to have primo imaginations on them, anyway, so they could easily pretend they were deeper in the wilderness than they’d actually be. That way, everyone was happy and no one had to pee in the woods. Win-win.
With Tim around to keep Shawn on track, making sure nothing shiny caught and held his attention for too long a period, they managed to get everything set up in time. Tents, food, fires (both real and
artificial), a makeshift covered sitting area fashioned out of what had to the biggest American flag he’d ever seen in his life - on loan from one of the guys with That Face - all of it was ready and waiting to go.
This was going to be good; they’d totally pull it off, no problem. Shawn just prayed that no raccoons crashed the party. They were the Devil's henchmen.
Tim was halfway certain that he wasn't only keeping an eye on the kids, but that he was keeping an eye on Shawn, too. He'd worn the scout suit that he'd found a few weeks ago, but it seemed to be pretty superfluous. This wasn't a real scout group. Or at least, it wasn't the kind of scout group where you earned badges and things. That was okay, though.
He was a little surprised when they stopped to set up camp so near to the Compound, but he supposed that it was a good precaution for the kids' first trip out. Next time, they'd be able to head out even more far away from civilization and they'd already know what they were doing.
He still wasn't sure what to do about the pretend fire that Shawn had brought along, but he ignored it for now. It was just another reason he was pretty sure he was adding Shawn to the list of 'kids to be watched'.
"All right, everyone. Why don't you tell me a little about yourselves?"
