It's been a month already, but so far Jack hasn't felt like the transition into parenthood has been particularly difficult. He thinks Kate might feel a bit different, considering she's the one who has to feed Sam and had to go through the labour, but he thinks that they're both sort of lucky. Sam doesn't scream, he doesn't shriek and he doesn't fuss, which makes looking after him a lot easier than Jack had expected.
With all this in mind, Jack offers to take Sam off Kate's hands after she's fed him and he's carrying his tiny son around the Hamlet when the wailing starts for the very first time. It begins as a sniffle, then a little waving of his fists before it turns into a full blown cry. That's nothing, Jack can handle a little crying.
Screaming, though, that's a bit of a problem.
"Shh, it's okay," Jack murmurs to Sam, lifting him gently, resting his son against his shoulder. Patting his back gently, Jack wonders if maybe he has gas or something, maybe he needs to be burped, but whatever he tries, Sam just keeps screaming. He wails in Jack's ear, gasping for air as he shrieks and squeals, making all sorts of noises Jack didn't even know he was capable of making.
"Come on, Sam," he pleads. "Work with me here, kid."
