There is a certain kind of tiredness that goes beyond simple exhaustion. "Bone tired," his mother called it. William never understood what she meant until now, after having been across the country, falling in love, saving a life, and almost losing his own. He understood what it is to be so tired that you feel it in every bone, every cell of your body. And after everything he had been through, everything he had said and seen, all he really wanted to do was sleep. Dreamless, heavy sleep. Preferably for several days.

As he trudged down the hall towards his bedroom, barely registering the joyous (albeit nervous) laughter of his mother and sister coming from the front porch, William could really only think about sleep. Which was alarming, all things considered - he has a lot of things he could potentially have been thinking about. How close he got to being published in Rolling Stone, if it hadn't been for Russell's inexplicable betrayal. Where Penny was, and if she was okay, and if she missed him at all. The fact that his sister had finally agreed to come home. Any of those things, really, should have been at the forefront of his mind. But they weren't.

He pushed open the door to his room, barely able to summon the strength to lift his arm, and walked to the foot of his bed. He stood before it. For a moment, he thought it was the most transcendently beautiful thing he'd ever seen, and then he remembered Penny, standing in the dusky light with tears on her cheeks, trying to smile about having been traded away for fifty bucks and a case of beer. Okay. Second-most transcendently beautiful thing.

He dropped his bags onto the floor and let gravity begin to pull him, facedown, onto his bed. He was so looking forward to the feel of the worn comforter on his face, the mattress that he was so used to and hadn't slept on for what seemed like eons. But when his freefall was stopped, it wasn't by his own, familiar bed - it was by a couch. And he didn't land well, ended up losing his balance and tumbling onto the floor with a dull thud.

William groaned and decided that, all things considered, his life might be easier for the moment if he just shut his eyes and stayed where he was.
