- It's just a drink. Alcohol clears the mind, sets one up for the day, or for the next one, until evening falls and a nightcap gently eases one to sleep again. Alcohol cleans the mind, like medication, keeps it preserved, keeps it all in working order, up and running. Alcohol numbs the mind, what hurt will be less painful, what worried will be ( Read more... )

Cole had never been one to pay much attention to his surroundings; whether it was self absorption or an excess of imagination likely depended on who you asked. But he nearly didn't notice Guy at all as he approached on the path to the Compound--but did, finally, catch sight of the brim of his hat out of the corner of his eye.

His face brightened, as it tended to do in Guy's presence, and crouched down in front of Guy. It didn't take him long to smell the alcohol, though he didn't comment, just whipped off the orchid pinned to his lapel and handed it to Guy with a flourish.

It wasn't a particularly smelly orchid, but Guy hadn't noticed anyone approaching him and so the sudden presence of a flower startled him and he winced.

After blinking a few times he looked up. "Cole," he managed. He even managed a smile as he accepted the flower. "A flower. Lovely."

Cole really wasn't the sitting on the ground type, so it was quite a concession when he settled down beside Guy.

"Is there a reason you're drinking alone, my dear?" he asked innocently.

"No," Guy replied, lightly enough. "But you solved my problem." He passed Cole the half-empty bottle of palm toddy liquor. He wouldn't be drinking alone if Cole joined.

Cole seemed to consider the bottle for a moment, then brought it up to his nose and sniffed.

"Palm wine? Well..." His nose twitched. "I suppose if your intention is just to get drunk, there isn't a reason to break out the good stuff."

"It was handy," Guy replied, somewhat annoyed to the assement that his only intention had been to get drunk. Even though it was an absolute truth. "And it's liquor. I distilled it."

Meanwhile, he had a flower in his hand. He looked to his shirt and realised he wasn't going to be able to coordinate the flower into any pinhole, not in his current state. So he placed it behind his ear instead, which was much easier.

"Ah," Cole said, and sniffed again before taking a drink and then handing the bottle back to Guy.

Lord but he missed having easy access to expensive scotch.

He reached over and straightened the flower, his hand lingering at Guy's neck. "Nothing's amiss, then?"

Even drunk, and even though it was a slightly possessive hand, Guy liked the light caress it caused. He looked at Cole in a manner that seemed quite dismal. "Everything's spiffing. Just enjoying the night."

"Hmmmmm..." Cole mused, letting his hand fall. "Somehow I think your definition of spiffing might be slightly different than mine."

The hand fell and Guy's head fell as well, onto Cole's shoulder, where it settled quite comfortably. "Perhaps,"

Cole slipped his arm around guy, slipping his hand up to card his fingers through his hair. "Well, you certainly don't have to be spiffing all the time," he pointed out. "And certainly not on my account."

"Well, I'm drunk, I should think that was perfectly obvious." To Guy the only thing that was wrong here was that he had suddenly been overcome by dizziness.

Cole's lips twitched. "Yes, my dear, that's very obvious. Are you planning on staying under this tree all day?"

People always insisted on asking idiot questions when he was drunk. "Hadn't planned sitting here," Guy replied dryly.

"Well, is there somewhere else that you would like to go?" Cole offered. "I would be happy to assist you. That is, if I don't drink the rest of what's in that bottle."

Guy had forgotten what he was going to do when he decided to leave the hut. He wanted to give Anthony a piece of his mind, but what piece exactly had been drowned in a blur of alcohol. "You're welcome to it. But I think going inside would do me good. The freshness of this air is hightly exaggerated." He looked in one direction out of the corner of his eye and then the other. He truly had no idea which was closer by; hut or compound.
