ever so much more than a pretty girl

The Doctor was sort of adjusting to being a woman again. Sort of. At least, this time, she hadn't screamed at the bits, at least this time Chase was himself, and she couldn't exactly spend ages having a good cry when there was a wee Nate to care for, a Will to remind to eat, and plenty of people to reassure that it was going to be all right, that ( Read more... )

"There you are," Chase murmured as he wandered into the room with Nate in his arms, giving him a sharp look. "He's been crying since you left," he accused, "And I think you accidentally dosed him with maternal affection and now he's in withdrawal. Take him," he insisted.

"I didn't accidentally dose anyone," the Doctor said, but she found that she couldn't help but smile at Chase as she got up and took Nate, who was whining a little until he twisted his fingers in her hair and clung on. "I can't help it, I swear."

God, at least Chase didn't look like Jane. She winced and untangled Nate's grasp so that it didn't take whole strands out.

And this is what happens when Rhi thinks she has hit a tag and hasn't.

Chase felt a relief when Nate seemed to calm down slightly and let himself fall over on the nearest couch. Thinking of it like one long babysitting job was getting difficult and he rubbed his eyes as he groaned and peered over at the Doctor. "How're you holding up?"

The Doctor gently bounced Nate, who made a cheerful babbling sound that was maybe like talking if you squinted, then went and perched on the arm of the couch. "I'm sort of just riding it out," she admitted. "I don't know, have I seemed hormonal to you, Rob? I keep doing these things, these stereotype things. Like the worst sitcom ever."

A bit of hyperbole, of course. She leaned over and looked down at Chase, who really was terribly pretty. He would probably like cookies too.

Benny was still practicing the walk. Trying to make it look natural, the way Jack had told her. She was loving the new body -- the temporary new body -- and she wanted to try everything with it she could think of. Really savour the whole experience. Strolling into the rec room in what she hoped was a convincingly manly fashion, she took in the unfamiliar, but very attractive and currently woman-shaped person on the sofa. No recognition there until she heard the swear that could only have come from a time lord.

Then she laughed so hard she was afraid she might pull something.

There was an unfamiliar bloke laughing at the Doctor, and before she could stop herself from doing so, she glanced up from the paper (cked by the Conservative MPs in committee) and said, very frankly, "Oh, piss off."

It was rather satisfying, really, because she wasn't on council anymore and could do such things. Diplomacy only got you so far when you had some serious gender-based issues to work out.

It wasn't easy for her to stay upright when she was laughing that hard, but somehow she managed it. Though, the Doctor's thoroughly annoyed response didn't help matters any. "Oh, not bloody likely, my dear Doctor."

She made her way over to the couch and plopped down beside him, slightly taken aback at how much difference a little extra muscle mass made. She'd have to be more careful or she could end up breaking a chair or something equally as absurd. "I think this is far too fantastic an experience not to savour."

It took about two seconds of watching the guy move for the Doctor to realise that it was not a guy at all, and about five more for her to figure out who it was. "Why not, Bernice, considering you'd just have to whip it out," she pointed out, feeling no need to temper herself. New body, slightly new Doctor--all right, more like used Doctor with the dents banged out.

"Once the I'm doing this for science bit wears off," she noted, deciding not to tell Benny what she'd done for science the last time, "it gets to be merely an inconvenience."

Ianto had been in the kitchen, but when he poked his head into the rec room only to find the Doctor (or what he thought was the Doctor, as that was bloody well what he had looked like last time) beating himself with a newspaper, his plans changed.

Within thirty seconds, he was strolling into the rec room in one of Charlie's sundresses, a cup of tea on a saucer filled with some fresh biscuits in each hand. "Come on now," he cajoled gently, seating himself beside the Doctor. "Have a cuppa and some biscuits and a nice breather and it'll be alright, Doctor."

The Doctor glanced up, mind going back through memories and flipping through stacks before she realised who it was. "I'm all right, Ianto," she reassured the Welsh...well, young woman, now. "It is Ianto, isn't it? I'm just upsetting myself, it's all part of a day's work."

The lilt in Ianto's voice reminded her of Gwen, a little, and she worked hard to keep on a pleasant look.

"No wonder you keep so busy," Ianto said, leaning back in his seat as he snatched a biscuit for himself to nibble on. "What are you upset about?"

"Being maternal," the Doctor said, and sipped at her tea before setting the newspaper, now crumpled to bits, aside. "It's entirely terrifying. Also, horrifyingly hormonal. I think I've gone into regeneration mode, Ianto, where I segue into this mindset without thinking about it."

The trouble with men being women and women being men at the moment was that it was hard to recognise people she knew. All of a sudden it looked like there were a lot more strangers on the island.

So she didn't take any notice of the woman also in the rec room until she heard her speak and knew she could only be one person.

"There isn't a Feminine Mystique, Doctor." Although if anyone had asked her what it was, she wouldn't have been able to say.

She took her tea to sit beside him on the sofa. "Did you regenerate or did the island do this?"

"You never read it? Wait, I suppose not, before your time."

It was a relief to see Jo herself, and the Doctor managed to peel herself off the newspaper. "This is island doing," she assured Jo. "No regenerations necessary, all 100% skinny not-ginger Doctor DNA, just with an extra X in place of the Y."

"Oh, good," she said with a sigh of relief. "I'd just got used to you looking the way you did and I'd hate for you to change every year."

"Frankly, so would I," the Doctor said, and reached for her mug of tea. "Believe it or not, Jo, you become accustomed to one over the other, and I wasn't ready to give up this one just yet."

She was pretty sure that she wouldn't be doing any more regenerating on the island, anyhow, which was somewhat of a relief. This body was quite nice. Even the mole on her back. Which was, in this version, still there.
