The adage was this: when life gives you lemons make lemon meringue.

Thus the recipe was this with one and a quarter cups sugar, three eggs separated, and the zest of one of those provided lemons as well as a variety of other things, Charlotte Charles set out to make lemon meringue with the help of her newly arrived stand mixer. It was sleek, it was shiny and if it had been car it would have been a shiny red 1962 Ford Thunderbird complete with all of the trimmings.

Alas no matter how many lemons were meringued, nor how many Bostons coasted in creamed or Alaskas baked, one Olive Snook could not be brought back to the kitchen to resume her duty as resident waitress on call. So with a heavy heart but a bright smile and the desire to fill and make happy many a stomach, Charlotte Charles prepared breakfast pies and lunch pies and pies for all occasion just to suit the mood. Of course, in an effort to leave to plate unfilled and no spoon unliked, on the far end of the counter sat one lonely cake, layers of strawberry and vanilla angel food, for no other reason than she could.

It was going to be a treat.
