Kon groaned softly when he woke up. It was still that time just before dawn when the entire world was quiet. Except that Kon could hear the chittering of squirrels and the calls of birds. He tried to roll over, but his feet tangled in the sheets and he kicked something off the bed as he was trying to get them out. That woke him up completely ( Read more... )

When she wakes the first thing she notices is that it's warm again and that brings a smile to her mouth before she even opens her eyes. It's not long before she's running down the beach, trying to take it easy after being cooped up for so long, but after a short time she just stretches out her legs and goes.

She slows to a stop only when she sees people gathered on the beach. Planting her feet she puts her hands on her hips, breathing hard, a little winded.

It's a beach party, which in Karolina's So Cal estimation, is the very best kind.

Bart jogged over when he spotted Karo running, stopping to grab a couple of drinks on the way. She was winded, which said she'd probably need it, and what were friends for.

"This, I could get used to," he commented, holding the first cup out to her. "Guess I'm not the only one enjoying the return of proper weather."

"You're not kidding. I'm so happy it's warm again. Hey thanks," she says gratefully, taking the cup and drinking down a few great gulps right away. "Ugh, it's been awhile," she says after she lowers the cup from her mouth. "I need to get back into my routine."

"Believe me, I know. Cold weather makes my knee hurt something fierce," Bart said, smiling. "If you want company, I'm sure we could work something out. Maybe trade pointers?"

It wasn't that she wasn't good. It was that his birthright was speed, and that meant he could teach her to be better, even without the Speed Force.

"Think I could keep up with you?" she asks, sort of doubting it. She knows he isn't what he'd been, but none of them are, but muscle memory is pretty amazing. Her own training with Dick has shown that.

"I never used to run before I got here," she admits.

"Runner's etiquette, when training with someone, you match pace, which means you get to set the bar, and I promise not to raise it too high. I need the conditioning a lot more than I need to shave hundredths off my time," Bart pointed out with a one-shouldered shrug.

"I always had a hard time slowing down for everyone else, to tell the truth. It's work to stay at someone else's speed."

She shakes her head and puts out her hands as if to say she has no idea. "I was in a lot better shape before the snow rolled in," she admits. "Just a little cold for my blood," she says, and the reality of it is that it's mostly true.

"Cold weather makes my knee ache," Bart responded. "Although it's a little more bearable now that I can actually use painkillers."

"You couldn't before? Or they didn't work?" Karolina asks curiously. "I bet you're glad it's nice again too then right?"

"It's more that my metabolism burned through stuff before it had time to work. I didn't get sick, but I had to really take care when I got hurt. Just because I healed fast didn't mean I healed right," Bart said, remembering. "Not to mention the fact that nobody can run on ice."

She makes a face at that, getting the picture pretty well without even having to ask. "That'd be a trick," she says and then clarifies, "Running on ice I mean. I saw a couple of people running in the snow, but I'm pretty sure they were nuts."

"I was one of those nuts," Bart pointed out with a laugh.

"Why am I not surprised?" she asks, teasing. "You wouldn't have caught me out in that whether for anything," she says without hesitation. "Good riddance in my opinion," she says grinning.

"It's good to train for adverse conditions," Bart said, shrugging. "I run on the sand, too. One of the Rogues back home was a guy calling himself Weather Wizard. He had this wand that let him change local conditions. It was actually pretty cool, if he hadn't used it to rob banks and stuff."

She rolls her eyes a little and grins, playfully giving him a little bit of a shrug. "That all you think about?" she challenges. It isn't that it isn't interesting, but... "We're playing hooky today right? So..." she drawls, "Instead of talking about running, how about I race you to the water!" she says and bolts, about 99% certain that he's not only going to catch up with her and her headstart, but beat her into the water long before she get there.

Bart almost didn't expect that, but he took off after Karolina easily, closing the distance in next to no time. Normally, he wouldn't have gone near the water, but something about this made him want to show off. Diving into the surf as soon as he's waist-deep, he easily pulls himself through the water to where the waves won't threaten to bring him back to shore unintentionally.

"Coming?"
