Even if he hadn't enjoyed a bit too much of the island hospitality, and even if it wasn't the wee hours of the morning, there was no way Rollie was taking himself or his kid back home in that storm. So long after Karen had crashed in one of the beds in the children's office, Rollie snagged himself a spare blanket out of a cupboard and bunked down ( Read more... )

The concept of New Year's Eve isn't foreign to Florence, but she isn't one for a party, no matter what the occasion, and so she's up at the Compound that morning as usual. The storm is probably the only thing that can cause her to put off her training for the day, so she's standing in the kitchen when Rollie stumbles in.

Eyebrow arched, she offers him a cup of coffee, imagining that he needs it more than she does.

"Oh god, I think I love you," he says, accepting the coffee without hesitation. He probably needs water more than coffee, medically speaking, but personally speaking there's nothing a person needs more than coffee when he's hung over. Except maybe bacon and eggs. "Didn't see you at the party."

Shaking her head, Florence turns away from Rollie to fill a glass of water, then sets that on the counter near him so that he knows it's meant for him as well. Gesturing toward the door of the Compound, she can't think of a way to mime what she means, so she scribbles it down on a scrap of paper from her pocket and pushes it toward Rollie. Watching the girls, it says, although she thinks he knows she wouldn't have come anyway.

"Ahh," he says and nods his head and takes the explanation at face value. "Well, it was a good time," he says. And Rollie's good enough at holding his liquor by now to remember the whole good time. "I left the kid sleeping downstairs."

Florence nods her understanding at that, then gestures toward the door again. The expression on her face makes it clear that the storm isn't exactly pleasant, although it hasn't stopped her from walking through it. For the time being, she's just grateful she has nowhere else to be.

"No sense getting her up just to tell her she's stuck indoors for the day," he says, nodding and reaching, not for the water, but for the coffee. "Did you happen to swing by the clinic?"

Giving a brief nod, Florence nudges the water toward him gently, giving a faint lift of an eyebrow. Then, to let him know there hadn't been any problems, she presses her lips together and gives a shake of her head. The clinic is fine. No patients.

"I don't think I'm going to make it out there today," he says, wincing as a pot clangs from somewhere behind them in the kitchen. "With my luck the kid would just trail after me and get lost in the storm."

Jerking her chin toward the door, she's saying, I'll go. It's not a job she minds doing by any means and she has nothing else planned for the day. It certainly won't hurt her to spend the day in the clinic if Rollie can't make it. He has other responsibilities that she doesn't, she understands this.

Rollie just shakes his head, though. "I don't think I want you out there either," he says. "I don't think I want anyone out there. Practically the whole island's still in the compound anyway. I'll go down first thing when the storm lets up."

It's a little bit like Mike acting protective of her and Florence can't help but smile a bit, looking amused. There are worse things than snow, but she nods, letting Rollie know she'll stay up at the Compound until it lets up.

"Don't give me that look," says Rollie, unable to make his eyebrows do quite what he wants them to without more pain that is worth it. "I might be a decade out of Canada but I still know snowstorms."

Florence snorts softly, but she nods, still looking amused. I won't go out in it, she's saying, only because she knows Mike would be equally as annoyed if she started wandering around in it and got herself lost.

"So what do you think the odds are that some greasy bacon is going to magically appear in front of me?" he says, unsure if that's exactly what he wants or exactly what he doesn't need.

An eyebrow arches as Florence makes it perfectly clear she's not about to cook for Rollie, but she pushes the glass of water closer to him with the tips of two fingers. Giving it a pointed look, she crosses her arms, waiting for him to drink some of it.

"Hey, I really did mean magically," Rollie protests. Florence's bad side is someplace he really thinks he doesn't want to be. He finally does take a sip of the water, knowing she's right, both medically or from long experience.
