For a long moment, all Lloyd could do was stand and stare from some distance, but then the countdown began, shaking him out of his stupor. Magic happened at midnight, right? Well, actually, magic reverted at midnight, but that was beside the fucking point, and he wasn't in the mood for nitpicking. He approached her, thinking for a second that maybe he should be asking for permission -- but come on, since when had he played everything nice and by the rules?
He had told her that he was no perfect gentleman.
Lloyd didn't know how to kiss fairytale style, but he wasn't some sloppy teenager either, and he wasn't going to pull a kiss and run. When he leaned in, he put all he had into it, making sure to savor the moment, because it wasn't like he was going to get another chance.

"Happy New Year, Janie," he said softly, buzzed enough not to feel any kind of awkward about the whole thing. A couple of seconds later, he moved away a little, grinning widely. "It's gonna be a good one." He made it sound like a promise, because it was something he needed - pretty fucking desperately - to believe.
