Kiss me at midnight, dance until the morning light.

If there was one thing Devon knew about a good New Year's Eve party, it was when to keep an eye on the clock and to get everyone's attention. He'd stuck close to Ellie five minutes to, and when the last minute began to tick away and nobody had done anything about it, he decided to take on the mantle ( Read more... )

It felt quite like the fairytales she had read about. Midnight would come and then depart and she would return home to Lydia and a life much more quiet than this. No more wines, no more foods. Simply peace and respite. It did not mean she would not marvel at the joy that came from such a gathering and it did her well to see the love of the place.

Anne approached her from the side, almost apprehensively-- a strange look for her who had always been bold. She let the back of her hand brush the back of Jane's hand just enough to let her know she was there.

"There is a custom," she began.

Jane regarded Anne curiously, her heart racing slightly as she wondered if perhaps, just perhaps, this was the same custom that Jane was thinking of. "Oh?" she asked, feeling as though she were running short upon breath.

"I would not presume, in front of a crowd, to do such a thing," Anne said, but looked up with a gleam in her eyes. "Without permission."

Jane nodded the once, for she had allowed such a thing earlier and could not precisely find it in her heart to deny the Queen such a thing. "I would never deny you, Ma'am," Jane swore softly, not once removing her gaze from Anne's face.

"Let us hope so," she said, and curled her fingers against the side of Jane's face, fingertips sliding into her hair. Anne leaned in and kissed her, almost chastely, but with warmth and feeling.

Jane felt the familiar (and oh! how strange it was that such a thing could be familiar, such a sinful and delightful thing) and she curled her fingers lightly against Anne's cheek as she kissed in return, pressing forward the slightest amount to assure Anne that she accepted such a lovely gesture.

Jesus, she looked beautiful.

For a long moment, all Lloyd could do was stand and stare from some distance, but then the countdown began, shaking him out of his stupor. Magic happened at midnight, right? Well, actually, magic reverted at midnight, but that was beside the fucking point, and he wasn't in the mood for nitpicking. He approached her, thinking for a second that maybe he should be asking for permission -- but come on, since when had he played everything nice and by the rules?

He had told her that he was no perfect gentleman.

Lloyd didn't know how to kiss fairytale style, but he wasn't some sloppy teenager either, and he wasn't going to pull a kiss and run. When he leaned in, he put all he had into it, making sure to savor the moment, because it wasn't like he was going to get another chance.

Jane was quite sure she knew who was kissing her, but it seemed an impossibility at that! She did not think that she would have a soul who would wish for her at midnight, not when there were so many lovely women and men to flit about the room. And yet, here she was, lucky as she could be and she pressed lightly back against the kiss.

She did not want to be seen as too forward, after all.

He smiled into the kiss, wrapping an arm around her. He hoped that if he tasted like booze, at least it was the good shit. Eventually, using self-control he wasn't aware he had, he managed to stop before it got kind of improper.

"Happy New Year, Janie," he said softly, buzzed enough not to feel any kind of awkward about the whole thing. A couple of seconds later, he moved away a little, grinning widely. "It's gonna be a good one." He made it sound like a promise, because it was something he needed - pretty fucking desperately - to believe.

Jane regarded him with the very widest of eyes, unsure precisely what to make of him at that very moment. All she could do was babble in a search for things like words and fail wholeheartedly, peering upon him with a longing look as she bit her lip and watched him. "Yes," she finally found cause to speak. "Yes, I do hope it shall be."
